Description: This photograph shows the Greyhound Bus Depot and a lunch counter in Ironton, Ohio, probably on 3rd Street, during the 1937 Ohio River flood, also referred to as the Great Flood. A sign is visible for the lunch counter advertising five cent hamburgers, lunch, and beer. In January and February of 1937, weeks of heavy rainfall caused the Ohio River to flood parts of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, causing $500 million in property damages, and displacing and killing hundreds. By the end of January, the Ohio River measured 80 feet deep in Cincinnati, one of the areas most affected. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dispatched thousands of relief workers from the Works Progress Administration to rescue flood victims and restore affected cities. Description: A photograph of the United States Capitol building, located in Washington DC. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. Description: Article reports that 108 employees of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base who had served for more than 30 continuous years were awarded for the length of their service. Aaron R. Fisher is said to have the longest service, at 43 years, 10 months and 10 days. Aaron R. Fisher was a highly decorated African American soldier during and after World War I; he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, Purple Heart, Mexican Service Medal, World War I Victory Medal and Army Commendation Medal for his services. After his discharge, he served as an ROTC instructor at Wilberforce University. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1947. View on Ohio Memory.

Many of these projects were similar to ones sponsored by the Public Works Administration. In addition to hiring people from traditionally working-class backgrounds, the WPA also created programs for academics, actors, and artists. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work.
