Description: This photograph was taken facing northeast and shows the McKinley Memorial, on the grounds of Capitol Square, outside the Ohio Statehouse. The McKinley Memorial, located at the West entrance of Capitol Square, sits overlooking High Street at the site of the Old Neil House where he and his wife lived while in Columbus. An arc with a center pedestal is surmounted by a bronze statue of heroic size representing the martyred President, William McKinley, delivering his last address at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York in 1901. Bronze groups of allegorical figures at each end of the arc are connected with the pedestal by a granite bench. The memorial, sculptured by H.A. McNeil, was unveiled September 14, 1906, five years after the 25th President's assassination. Costs totaled $50,000 which came from legislation and public donations. The Ohio State Capitol, located at 1 Capitol Square, is a 2 acre building which stands in a 10-acre park bounded by High, Broad, State, and Third Streets, in downtown Columbus. Description: Christopher Columbus statue is located at the southwest corner of the Ohio State Capitol, which can be seen in the background of the photograph. The statue was originally placed on the grounds of the Pontifical College Josephenium by the school’s founder, Monsignor Joseph Jenning. When the seminary moved from its eastside location to a larger campus north of the city in 1932, the statue was given to the city and has been on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse ever since. Made by the W.H. Mullins Company in Salem, Ohio, the hollow statue is made of hammered copper plates attached by rivets. The date 1882 can be seen on the base, in the photograph. Description: The ‘My Jewels Monument’, sometimes called ‘These Are My Jewels Statue, and located on the Northwest corner of Capitol Square, is a group of bronze statues on a granite pedestal. Created by Levi T. Scofield (a Union officer who had previously created the epic Sailors and Soldiers Monument in Cleveland), the monument was exhibited by the State of Ohio at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and then placed on its present site. Figures of Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Philip H. Sheridan, Edwin M. Stanton, James A. Garfield, Salmon P. Chase, and Rutherford B. Hayes, Ohio soldiers and statesmen, surround a shaft topped by a statue of Cornelia, the Roman matron. Her words, ‘These Are My Jewels,’ stand out in relief at the top of the shaft. Taken from an anecdote from Roman history about Cornelia, a wealthy and respected Roman woman who considered her sons, Gaius and Tiberius, her jewels. The statue is meant to personify the state of Ohio by having Cornelia presenting to the nation in time of crisis the state's best and brightest sons to be used in the service of the war effort. General Roeliff Brinkerhoff had the idea of the statue because he believed that that Ohio's most distinguished contribution to the nation was from its men. Stairways lead from the floor of the rotunda to the Hall of Representatives and the Senate Chamber. At the head of the stairway on the north side stands the Lincoln Memorial, a bust of Lincoln executed by T.D. Jones. Directly to the east is a wall panel showing in relief a group of Union and Confederate officers who participated in the battle of Vicksburg. Outstanding among the capitol’s works of art is a large painting in the east foyer, Battle of Lake Erie, by William H. Powell. A copy of this paining is displayed in the nation’s Capitol.
