Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows young boys playing a ball game in gym class at Ashland Grade School in Ashland Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Ashland County formed on February 24, 1846, and is located in the north-central portion of Ohio. The county seat and the largest population center is Ashland, with just over twenty-one thousand residents in 2000. The county is heavily rural, with farms comprising over sixty percent of Ashland County's 424 square miles. Ashland farmers rank fifth in oat production in Ohio and fourth in sheep raising. The United Brethren Church opened Ashland College, the predecessor of Ashland University, in 1879, in Ashland, Ohio. The school originally enrolled seventy-five students and had eight faculty members. The institution struggled during its first years, eventually filing for bankruptcy in 1888, and the court ordered the school's sale. In 1888, the United Brethren Church purchased Ashland College's buildings from the court and established Ashland University. The next year, Ashland University founded a theological seminary. The institution continued to struggle financially, closing its doors in both 1896 and 1897. In 1898, Ashland University reopened its doors and returned to its original name of Ashland College. Within four years, the institution had eliminated its previous debts and established a sizable endowment, allowing the school to construct new buildings and expand its faculty. Description: Photograph showing fireworks during the Bicentennial fireworks celebration in Ashland, Ohio, July 4, 1976. The image was submitted by photographer Brian Roseborough of Ashland in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. He was well know in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois for selling apple tree saplings and encouraging the settlers to build apple orchards. Description: Caption reads: "Ice skating on Brookside Pond, Ashland, Ohio." Brookside Park was constructed in 1917 as a result of fundraising by local jeweler Frank Downs and his pastor Rev. A. B. Robertson of the Christian church. The city of Ashland purchased the former Knapp Quarry for $450 and converted the old stone quarry into a duck pond area. Located off of Brookside Drive and Lindale Avenue, the park included the quarry area and surrounding six acres of land. Brookside Park expanded in later years, with the addition of a swimming pool, the Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, shelter houses, shuffleboard, and horseshoes. View on Ohio Memory.
