There are hundreds of people watching in the stands and several standing in the center of the track. Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). He served as a US senator from 1909 to 1915; and in the House of Representatives from 1921 until the end of 1928. When he died in 1929, he was serving in the US Senate as the appointed replacement for Frank B. Willis. Burton was born in Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio on December 20, 1851. Born in Chillicothe, Burton Stevenson devoted his life to the written word. He was a prolific author (he wrote more than 50 books), an anthologist, and a librarian. Following stints as a journalist while a student at Princeton University and then at newspapers in Chillicothe, Stevenson became the librarian of that city's public library in 1899. He held the post for 58 years. Stevenson helped secure a Carnegie Library for Chillicothe, completed in 1906, and became prominent for his service during World War I. He founded a library at Camp Sherman (an army training camp north of the city), which became a model for others nationally. Stevenson then went to Paris as the European director of the Library War Service. After the Armistice in 1918, he established the American Library in Paris and directed it until 1920 and again from 1925 - 1930. In addition to his accomplishments as a librarian, he wrote or compiled more than 50 books, including "The Mystery of the Boule Cabinet" (1912), the "Home Book of Quotations" (1934), and many works for young people. Description: Theodore Burton (1851-1929) was born in Jefferson, Ohio, on December 20, 1851, and graduated from Oberlin College in 1872. He began his political career in 1889 after being elected as a Representative and years later as a Senator from Ohio. Throughout his life he had interrupted spells in the US House of Representative and Senate. In 1916, he was a candidate for Republican nomination for president. In 1922, President Warren G. Harding appointed Burton to represent the United States at the World War Debt Funding Commission, and Burton served as the head of the American delegation at the Geneva Conference in 1925. He died in Washington, DC, on October 28, 1929. View on Ohio Memory.

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification.
