Description: This photograph shows a portion of South Main Street, towards Central Avenue, in Middletown, Ohio. Rails and power lines for an electric streetcar run down the middle of the bustling street. A sign for State Routes 4 and 73 can be seen in front of the church, which stands at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and South Main Street. The church on the right has been demolished, however the Sorg Theatre, located at 65 S. Main St., is still standing, and renovations began in 2009 to return the Ford style theater to it's original splendor. Just past the theater is Eureka Confectionery, which was most likely owned by George Eliopoulos, and which was located at 327 S. Main Street. A Sears Roebuck store can be seen just before the Middletown Savings and Loan Building, which stands at the southeast corner of South Main Street and Central Avenue. The tall building at the north west corner of S. Main St. and Central Avenue was the First National Bank. Just before that is the U.S. Hotel and V.W. Bond Co. Furniture. Description: Portrait of a seated man wearing a broad hat, legs crossed, and a standing young girl holding a folded umbrella. Negative is marked "Geo Ruckman, Eureka, Wva." This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of the shoring up of the National Outfitting Company building in Columbus, Ohio, by the C.W. Bryant Jr. Company. Also pictured are signs for the Eureka Hotel and the Wilson Seed and Floral Company. Charles William Bryant Jr. was born in Dayton in 1882, and from his start as a farmhand with a 3rd grade education would go on to become a prominent African American businessman, self-taught engineer, and owner of one of Columbus’ largest construction firms. The C. W. Bryant Rigging & Moving Co. was involved in major projects throughout Columbus, including the construction of a temporary Broad Street bridge following the 1913 flood, the removal of lighting arcs from High Street, and dismantling Hanford Village in 1962 for the construction of I-71. Bryant faced racial discrimination in his personal and professional life, including the refusal of local steelworkers’ unions to admit Bryant’s black employees, which forced Bryant Co. out of steel construction in the 1950s. He nonetheless expanded into other areas, including ownership of Bryco gas stations, a coal and oil company, the Litchford and Macon hotels, and the Ohio Malt Beverage Co.-the first African American distributor in Columbus.
