Hayes House, built in 1859, is a large red brick Victorian style structure in located at 1337 Hayes Avenue in Fremont Ohio. It stands in Spiegel Grove State Park, the former Hayes Estate. It was the residence of the former President from 1873 to 1893. The 2-story mansion, constructed between 1859 and 1863 has 8 bedrooms and a large veranda. The home was remodeled twice, in 1880 (adding a large library and an impressive staircase leading to a rooftop observation area, as well as many other improvements) and 1889 (replacing and enlarging one wing). Description: The First Presbyterian Church of Fremont, Ohio was established on November 30, 1833. The congregation met in various buildings until they were able to build a church in 1847. It was built on the corner of Park Avenue and Garrison Street. Due to the growth of the congregation, a cornerstone was laid for the new Romanesque style edifice on the site of their former place of worship. Three years later, it was dedicated debt free. It became the first tall-steepled church downtown in the city of Fremont. Stained glass windows were added in an extensive renovation in 1893-94, bringing it to its present day appearance. It was built as a summer home that Birchard could share with his nephew and family. The construction period was from 1859 to 1863. It took five years because of the difficulty obtaining workers and supplies due to the American Civil War. The home had eight bedrooms and a wrap around veranda. The veranda was particularly loved by President Hayes. In 1873 he wrote in his diary "The best part of the present house is the veranda. But I would enlarge it. I want a veranda with a house attached." Hayes spent the next 20 years planning and improving his home. He moved his family into the home in 1873, where they lived until he became Governor of Ohio in 1875. Them he became President of the United States, moving back to Fremont in 1880. At that time, he added a library to house his 12,000 books, a large reception room, three bedrooms and indoor plumbing. A four-story walnut and butternut staircase leads to a rooftop lantern giving a 360 degree view of Spiegel Grove, the Hayes Estate. In 1888, they demolished a back wing and added a larger one, in anticipation of family visits. The new large wing has a dining room, kitchen, two servants rooms and three bedrooms. Mrs Hayes died during the last construction, and President Hayes died in January 1893. They both died in the home they loved in Spiegel Grove. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: At the turn of the nineteenth century, the Presbyterian Church's Western Missionary Society sent Rev. Joseph Badger to what is now Fremont Ohio to establish a mission to the Wyandot tribe. In later decades, white settlers began to settle in the area and on November 30, 1833. a group of 22 people met at the courthouse to establish a Presbyterian Church. The congregation met in several different places until 1844, when land was purchased to build a church building on the corner of Park Avenue and Garrison Street. The building was completed in 1847. In 1869, the Presbyterians laid a cornerstone for a new Romanesque style building on the site of the former house of worship. The church with the first tall steeple in Fremont was dedicated debt-free four years later. During this time, the leadership of the church was provided by the Rev.
