The image was one of ten to win Honorable Mention in the Professional category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: A truck drives past a Sohio filling station in the distance, at the Obetz exit along Route 23 south of Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller, Sohio stations are now defunct, having been acquired by British Petroleum and converted to BP stations. In the foreground are several political posters advertising the re-election campaigns of Judges Johnson, Macklin, and Stark. The High Street Photograph Collection is comprised of over 400 photographs of High Street in Columbus, Ohio, taken in the early 1970s. These photographs were taken primarily at street level and document people and the built environment from the Pontifical College Josephinum on North High Street in Worthington through Clintonville, the University District and Short North, Downtown and South Columbus. The photographs were used in a television photo documentary that aired on WOSU called "High Street." Description: Photograph of a full length portrait of Lucy Webb Hayes, wife of United States President Rutherford B. Hayes, 1881. Original portrait was created by Daniel Huntington. Lucy Webb was born on August 28, 1831 in Chillicothe, Ohio. She married Rutherford B Hayes on December 30, 1832. They became the parents of eight children. She died in Fremont, Ohio on June 25, 1889 and was buried in Fremont City Cemetery. Later, she was re-interred to Spiegel Grove. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Carte-de-visite of Civil War Brevet Brigadier General Andrew Hickenlooper (1837-1904), who later served as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. The photograph features a bust view of a young, Federal officer with a mustache and thin goatee. The rank on his shoulder boards features one star, indicating Brigadier General. Andrew Hickenlooper was born in Hudson, Ohio on August 10, 1837, to parents Andrew and Abigail Hickenlooper. He enlisted in the Civil War as a Captain on August 31, 1861, and was later promoted to Brigadier General and Lieutenant Colonel. Hickenlooper served through the Atlanta campaign as an engineer with distinguished honor and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea, and the advance through the Carolinas. After the war, Hickenlooper was appointed United States marshal for the Southern district of Ohio and served two terms as city civil engineer. In 1879, he was elected the 15th lieutenant governor of Ohio under Governor Charles Foster. He was married to Maria Lloyd Smith and lived at 838 Dayton Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. He died on May 12, 1904, and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. Cincinnati, Ohio at Gravesite: 53-167-2. Description: This photograph shows a walking path weaving through the trees of Birchard Park in Fremont, Ohio. A note on the reverse of the photograph reads "Fremont, O Pathway in Birch & Oak Playgrounds in distance, Aug 10-39." Dedicated October 19, 1871, the land that now constitutes Birchard Park was donated to the city by Sardis Birchard. Birchard was the uncle of President Rutherford B. Hayes, brother of Rutherford B. Hayes Senior. After the death of his brother, Birchard took an active role in his nephew's life, including overseeing his education and purchasing Spiegel Grove for Hayes' home, now the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. Birchard settled in Sandusky, Ohio, now called Fremont, where he became a successful banker and merchant. Birchard made many public donations to the city, including the building and endowment for the public library (Birchard Public Library) as well as two public parks, one of which is Birchard Park. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This album contains photographs taken during President-elect Warren G. Harding's vacation in St. Augustine, Florida, in the month before his 1921 inauguration. The vacation included activities like golfing, boating, and visiting historical landmarks in the city, and was documented by the St. Augustine Elks Lodge, No. 829, with photographs by P.A. Wolfe. Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923) was born in Corsica (now called Blooming Grove), a small town in Morrow County, Ohio. His family moved to Marion, where Harding taught school, briefly studied law, and worked occasionally as a reporter for a local paper before buying the Marion Star in 1884. Harding became popular as a local bandleader at political rallies, and for his skill as an orator. Willing to follow the lead of political bosses, Harding advanced rapidly in Ohio politics, serving as state senator and lieutenant governor. In 1914, Harding was elected to the U. S. Senate. He launched his famous "front porch" 1920 presidential campaign from the porch of his Victorian home in Marion. He won the presidency with sixty percent of the popular vote, promising a "return to normalcy" following the wave of reforms begun during Theodore Roosevelt's administration. St. Augustine is the nation's oldest European-occupied settlement, settled by the Spanish in 1565. It is located along Florida's Atlantic coast, and is home to several historic landmarks that Harding visited including the Hotel Ponce de Leon (now a part of Flagler College), Castillo de San Marcos, the Plaza de la Constitucion, and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park.
