Courthouse and Soldiers' Monument in Cambridge, Ohio  Save
Description: The County of Guernsey was formed in 1810 and named for the settlers who came from the Island of Guernsey, off the coast of France. The first courthouse was a Greek Revival building on Public Square in Cambridge. After seventy years, need arose for a new courthouse because of the growth in population. The courthouse in the photograph is the second courthouse. It was designed by Joseph Yost in the the popular Second Empire style, and built of fine sandstone with a hipped roof and mansard-roofed towers. A central tower has a four faced clock with louvered arched openings. A broken pediment on the southern face contains the statue of Justice. Below the statue is a fan shaped stone bearing the date 1881. The main entrance stair case is covered by a small balcony. Surrounding the court house are several memorials to the soldiers of Guernsey county in wars from the American Civil War to Operation Desert Storm. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Stone S Bridge on National Road (US 40) in Guernsey County. The National Road was one of the first paved (compacted gravel) roads to cross the Appalachian Mountains. Construction began in Cumberland, Maryland in 1815, and contractors completed the road to Wheeling, Virginia (modern-day West Virginia), in 1817. Eventually, the federal government extended the road to near St. Louis, Missouri. The National Road was constructed in Guernsey County, Ohio in 1828, and a few of the stone bridges are still used today. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing an S-Bridge along Route 40, the National Road, in Guernsey County, Ohio. The photograph was collected in the D. Henry Overman Bridge Collection, which documents the career of Overman, a native of Waverly, Ohio, and a resident of Columbus. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1923 with a degree in civil engineering. Overman joined the Ohio Department of Highways (now the Ohio Department of Transportation) on June 10, 1918, where he was employed until his retirement in 1964, serving as assistant chief for the Bureau of Bridges for nine years, and as the chief of the Bureau for his last eight years on the job. During his approximately 45 year career, Overman designed a number of bridges in Ohio, including the stone-faced bridge over the Scioto River at Routes 161 and 33 in Dublin, and the Lorain Avenue Viaduct, a steel bridge in Cleveland. 2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
  7. Photographs of Objects. The Ohio History Connection retains rights to photographs taken of artifacts owned by the Ohio History Connection. The images may be used for research, but any publication or public display is subject to the above conditions of reproduction. A new use agreement and appropriate fees must be submitted for each use
