Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows a 300 year old beech tree on Geology Trail at Ault Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ault Park is the fourth largest park in Cincinnati. In in the 1940's the park was said to be 235.5 acres, but at some point shrank to its current 223.949 acres. The observation pavilion, designed by Fechheimer and Ihorst, gives the visitor 360 degree views of the formal gardens and the Little Miami Valley, as well as Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati, and the Kentucky hills. George Kessler initially designed the gardens, and were later modified by A.D. Taylor. Forest trails follow the Red Bank Creek, where interesting geological formations can be enjoyed. The park was named for Mr. and Mrs. Levi Addison Ault, who donated all but 30 acres of land for the park. A bronze plaque by Clement J. Barnhorn, set in rose granite glacial boulder and located at the south end of the pavilion, honors Mr. Ault. The pavilion's water cascade, between a double flight of stairs, was built in 1930, but fell into disrepair during the 1960s. It continued to deteriorate for roughly 25 years, until donations from the city of Cincinnati and its citizens enabled renovations. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The caption reads: "Little Miami Valley and river view from Fort Ancient, Warren County, Ohio." Fort Ancient is a series of earthen embankments that extend for more than three-and-a-half miles around a high bluff along the Little Miami River in Warren County, Ohio. It was built by the Hopewell culture between 100 B.C. and A.D. 400. Although it is called a "fort," it probably never served as a defensive work. Ditches are located inside the walls rather than outside as might be expected if it was an actual fort. Also, there are more than 60 gateways in the enclosure, which would have made it difficult to defend against enemies. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "John H. Patterson directing rescue work, the Dayton flood, March 1913." John H. Patterson was a business man who founded the National Cash Register Company. He led recovery efforts during the flood and formed the Dayton Citizen's Relief Commission, following the 1913 flood that devastated the Miami Valley. The Relief Commission quickly raised a $2 million Flood Prevention Fund and employed Arthur Morgan, who later was the first director of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Morgan Engineering Company to develop a flood protection plan for the city of Dayton. After some preliminary survey work, Morgan's engineers concluded that effective flood protection was too large an undertaking for one community and would require the cooperative action of the entire Miami Valley. Since Ohio did not have a law that would permit a regional cooperative undertaking of this nature, the Conservancy Act of Ohio was prepared and passed by the legislature on February 14, 1914. The day after the signing of the Conservancy Act by the governor, a petition was filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Montgomery County asking for the establishment of the Miami Conservancy District. Description: Original description reads: "Cinci., O., Sept. 1937 Fort Washington Monument." In 1789, Fort Washington was built to protect early settlements located in the Symmes Purchase in the Miami Valley of what is now southwestern Ohio. The fort was located in modern-day Cincinnati and protected settlers of that city in its early years. The stockade's walls were two stories high with blockhouses located at each corner. The fort was named in honor of President George Washington. In 1790, Harmar used Fort Washington to launch an expedition against the Miami Indians, whose principal city was Kekionga (modern-day Fort Wayne, Indiana). The fort would serve similar purposes for the remainder of the 1790s until the United States Army abandoned it in 1803. View on Ohio Memory.
