Dick (1858-1945), chair of the House Committee on Militia Affairs, co-sponsored the Militia Act of 1903 (also called the Dick Act), which created the National Guard from the organized state militias. The legislation gave state militias federal status and funding; in turn, the U.S. Army now had a pool of reserve units that could be mobilized for various emergencies and military needs. Description: This art deco style illustration for “Newark” was used in The Ohio Guide. It depicts a Native American reaching towards the sun and several factory buildings. A signature of the artist “Homer Seay” can also be seen. This illustration is a photographic reproduction of a drawing. It is one of a series produced as possible chapter headings for The Ohio Guide. From 1935 to 1942, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), through its Federal Writers' Project created The American Guide Series, which included forty-eight state guides, as well as supplemental guides for large cities, etc. The state guides are divided into three sections. In the first section are general essays about the state on things such as agriculture, culture, history, industry, religion, etc. The second section contains an overview of the various cities and towns around the state, as well as enumerating various points of interest. The last section is dedicated to various tours around the state. The tourist is taken from city to city, with turn by turn directions, and descriptions of what can be seen along the way. While much of the country has grown and changed since the guides were written, it is surprising how much remains, and sometimes more surprising what has been lost. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The "Spirit of Columbus," an airplane flown by pioneering female pilot Geraldine "Jerrie" Mock of Newark, Ohio, photographed in a hangar at Port Columbus airport in Columbus, Ohio. In 1964 Mock was the first woman to complete a solo flight around the world. Her trip took less than one month to complete and set speed records for planes of this size. Description: Photograph taken during a reunion of the First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company D, on the steps of the Newark Courthouse in Newark, Ohio. Pictured are a number of men as well as several children and some women, likely the wives or widows of 1st OVC veterans. Organized at Camp Chase in the fall of 1861, the First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry was mustered in for a three-year term of service. Among other engagements, the regiment fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, the Siege of Corinth and the Atlanta Campaign. During the American Civil War, Ohio provided the United States government with three types of military units: artillery units, cavalry units, and infantry units.
