Description: Caption reads: "'Lost town Site, Zane's trace." Zane's Trace was a frontier road constructed under the direction of Col. Ebenezer Zane through the Northwest Territory of the United States, in what is now the state of Ohio. Many portions were based on traditional Native American trails. Constructed during 1796 and 1797, the road ran from Wheeling, Virginia (now Wheeling, West Virginia) to Maysville in the portion of the Northwest Territory that eventually became the southeastern quarter of the state of Ohio. It was more than 230 miles (370 km) long and was interrupted by several rivers. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This blue Atlas canning jar was manufactured between 1930 and 1960. It was manufactured by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Corporation, which had its corporate headquarters in Wheeling, West Virginia. Hazel-Atlas was established after the merger of the Hazel Company, the Atlas Glass Company, Republic Glass and the Wheeling Metal Company in 1902. The company produces glass containers, lids, and other materials until it was purchased by Brockway Glass Company in 1964 and ceased using the Atlas name. The jar measures 5.5" x 3.15" x 2.75" (14 x 8 x 7.1 cm). During World War II, conserving garden produce for later consumption became a vital activity to support the war effort. Canning and drying food was essential to increasing the food supply on the home front, for troops abroad, and for hungry citizens of Allied nations. The canning process prevented fruits and vegetables from spoiling. By removing oxygen from jars holding produce, undesirable bacteria would not be able to grow. Good vacuums created in canning jars formed tight seals that keep liquid in and air out. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Group portrait of seven young men. The photograph is presented in an oblong-shaped mat edged with two gold lines. Four men are seated in the first row and three are standing in the second row, and all appear to be dressed in military uniform jackets. Their names are recorded on the mat below the photograph but the ink has spread making the writing difficult to read. The handwritten text seems to read "Top row Lafayette Franks No. 8. Sumner Ellis No 1. William Brennan No 1./ Lower row Patrick W. Slattery, James M. Wright gunner, William H. Goldsmith Searg. John Dow No. 28." These men served in Battery C of the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. Battery C was organized in Wheeling, West Virginia between January 25, 1862 and March 30, 1862. Battery C was mustered out on June 28, 1865. It had a total of 173 men, with 106 enlisting from Washington County, Ohio, and 67 from West Virginia. The 1st West Virginia Light Artillery Regiment lost 33 men, killed and died of wounds; 131 men, died of disease, accident or in prison; total deaths, 164 men. The National Road was one of the first paved roads (constructed of compacted gravel) to cross the Appalachian Mountains. Congress authorized construction of the National Road in 1806, and in 1811, awarded contracts to private builders to begin construction. The War of 1812 prevented work from beginning until 1815, when construction began in Cumberland, Maryland, and the contractors completed the road to Wheeling, Virginia (modern-day West Virginia), in 1817. Description: This color image shows the S-Bridge in Muskingum County, outside of New Concord, Ohio. The S-bridges were single-arch stone bridges, which crossed small, curving streams with uneven banks. Here the road over the bridge merges with a four-lane highway (U.S. 40). This bridge is known by several names: Fox Run S-Bridge; Fox Creek S-Bridge, and S-Bridge II. S-Bridges were a type of bridge used on the National Road, one of the first paved (gravel) roads to cross the Appalachian Mountains. The United States Congress authorized construction of the road in 1806. In 1811 the Congress awarded contracts to private builders to construct the road. The War of 1812 prevented construction from beginning until 1815. Construction began in Cumberland, Maryland, and the contractors completed the road to Wheeling, Virginia (modern-day West Virginia), in 1817. Eventually, the federal government extended the road to near St. Louis, Missouri. Construction of the National Road occurred in Ohio from 1825 to 1838. In 1926 the National Road became part of U.S. 40. The S-Bridge, when viewed from above, resembles the letter "S." Workers made the bridges out of cut stone, which proved to be a more durable material than wood. The reason for the unusual shape was to make construction easier for the workers. When the National Road crossed a creek or stream at an angle, the workers built the bridge's supporting arches at a right angle to the stream. This process allowed water to flow through the arches more easily and also allowed workers easier access to build the bridges from each side of a creek or stream. Some people claim that the S-Bridges were designed to stop runaway horses, but there is no supporting evidence for this claim. A total of five S-Bridges existed along the National Road in Ohio.
