Description: Dated ca. 1880-1900, these are advertisements for coach and hearse models from Merts & Riddle Coach and Hearse Company in Ravenna, Ohio. The first page features an Improved No. 9, page 2 features No. 70 and includes a description which reads "This cut represents our medium size Funeral Car. It has finest quality polished French plate glass; hammer cloth on seat, black broad-cloth lambrequin curtains, trimmed with heavy black silk fringe and tassels; large, hand carved wood center urn on top; late style silver-plated inside drop rails, with bouquet holders. Table plates, table rollers, bier pins, hub-caps, hub-bands, seat rail and pole crab, silver-plated; elegant silver lamps; best Collinge axles; best oil-tempered Swede steel springs and best steel tire. Description: Dated 1895, this is an advertisement from The Specialty Glass Co. in East Liverpool, Ohio, for their Crystal Pennova Ware. The Specialty Glass Co. manufactured blown, pressed, cut, and engraved tableware. The company was founded in 1882, but was not prosperous until 1888. Because the Ohio Gas Company could not provide sufficient gas supplies, glass production stopped several times throughout the 1890s, and the company also fought the city for a railroad from the city streets to the plant. By 1897, the company decided to leave the city due to the lack of cooperation with the city council, but in 1898 the plant caught fire and burned down and the decision was made to not rebuild. Description: This image of Santa Claus bringing mittens to sleeping children decorated an advertising card for Star soap, made by Schultz & Co. in Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1890-1900. The back of the card includes an advertisement for Star soap. The card measures 7.75" x 5.75" (19.5 x 14.5 cm). William Shultz purchased the Brown and Covers factory in Zanesville in 1853 and began manufacturing soap. His son, Robert D. Shultz, and nephew, John Hoge, succeeded him in the business. Hoge developed a puzzle contest to boost sales. The company also encouraged sales by offering soaps with unique names and features, including a soap called Vaterland (Fatherland) that appealed to German immigrants, floating Duck soap, and Gold soap, which came in bulk packed in a wooden crate with one bar containing a gold dollar. In 1879 the company built the Schultz Opera House and Schultz Block in Zanesville. View on Ohio Memory.

The Hoster Brewing Company was located at 760 Harmon Avenue in Columbus's German Village neighborhood. The brewery was founded in 1836 and was producing 300,000 barrels per year in the early 20th century. In 1904, Hoster consolidated with three other large Columbus brewing companies--Born and Co., Schlee and Columbus Brewing Company--to form the Hoster-Columbus Associated Breweries. 2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
  7. Photographs of Objects. The Ohio History Connection retains rights to photographs taken of artifacts owned by the Ohio History Connection. The images may be used for research, but any publication or public display is subject to the above conditions of reproduction. A new use agreement and appropriate fees must be submitted for each use
