Description: Joe Munroe captures Dr. Wise Burroughs at work in this 1952 photograph. As a research scientist, Burroughs inspects the content of a cow's first stomach, the rumen, through a surgically-implanted hole in the stomach. From this, researchers can gain information on the digestion of certain materials by the cow. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs.
