During the late nineteenth century, Toledo was known as the "City of Glass" for its numerous glass-producing facilities. However, due to its dependence on manufacturing, the city suffered high unemployment rates during the Great Depression. As World War II began, Toledo's industries began to focus on wartime production, and unemployment concerns disappeared. Toledo made a unique contribution to the war effort; home to the Willys-Overland Company, this firm began producing military Jeeps in 1941. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This Greek Revival home was built in 1834 in Lancaster, Ohio by the William James Reese family. William Reese, educated at the University of Pennsylvania, he came to Lancaster in 1827 and set up a law office known as Reese and Hezlin. He married Mary Elizabeth Sherman, sister of General William T. Sherman. The house is currently the home of the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This house was built in 1828 by John Pray as a trading post and stagecoach stopping post. It has served many purposes over the years, from a jail to a school to a ballroom. In 1927, Henry Ford held his Halloween party in the building, probably because of its reputation for being haunted. In the 1930s, this house was occupied by Toledo antiques dealer Charles Capron. Description: This is a photo of the Golden Lamb Hotel as taken from across the street. Shown in the picture at the front of the hotel are a variety of classic cars. The Golden Lamb, formerly the old Lebanon House, is the oldest hotel in the state of Ohio, being established by Jonas Seaman in 1803. The establishment was a success and became known for its quality food and lodging. Two years later the Warren County courthouse was built across the street, increasing the business of the Golden Lamb. The tavern served as a meeting place for troops during the War of 1812 and as a stagecoach stop during the nineteenth century. The present day, four-story building was built in 1815 during the rebuilding of the inn. The inn has had many famous guests such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and twelve United States Presidents. The Golden Lamb, which continued to operate into the 21st century, is one of the oldest hotels in Ohio. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. View on Ohio Memory.
