    Description: A silver cup engraved with "Ohio State Board of Agriculture Premium" was awarded at the Ohio State Fair in Cleveland in either 1852 or 1856. Premiums were awarded for the best agricultural products such as animals, agricultural implements, field crops, fruits, domestic goods and mechanic arts. The cup was produced by Ralph Cowles and Joseph Albertson, whose company was located at 49 Superior Avenue in Cleveland. It measures 3.14 by 3.14 by 4.52 inches (8 by 8 by 11.5 cm). The Ohio State Fair was an important opportunity for farmers to promote their crops and livestock and to learn about advances in agricultural machinery. The first state fair was held in Cincinnati in 1850. In the ten years that followed, Newark, Sandusky, and Zanesville hosted the fair . Cleveland hosted the fair in 1852 and 1856, before it settled permanently in Columbus. View on Ohio Memory.

    Description: Dated 1854, this is a diploma awarded by the Hocking County Agricultural Society to Catherine C. Hopley for the best specimen of fancy drawing at the Annual Fair in Logan, Ohio, in Hocking County. The diploma is signed by R. Wright, president, presumably of the Fair Board. The text is surrounded by a detailed drawing which features agricultural tools and equipment at the top, and two women sitting on statue bases. Catherine was the elder sister of John P. Hopley of Bucyrus, Ohio. She authored one of the first popular books on snakes, titled "Snakes: Curiosities and Wonders of Serpent Life" in 1882. She made a number of other important contributions to the study of herpetology and did fieldwork on snake populations in Ohio. Hopley authored a variety of other texts, including "Sketches of the Ophidians" (1873), "Life in the South" (1863), and "Adventures in the Wilds of the West" (1872). View on Ohio Memory.

    Description: Aviator Jerrie Mock (at left) of Bexley, Ohio, pictured with Marjorie Whiteman at Women's Recognition Day at the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, 1979. Mock was being inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame for her remarkable accomplishment of completing the first solo flight around the world by a woman, made in a single-engine Cessna 180 named "The Spirit of Columbus" in 1964. Marjorie Whiteman was being inducted the same day for her contributions to the field of law, including her roles as legal advisor to Eleanor Roosevelt, advisor to ten Secretaries of State over a span of 40 years, vice president of the American Society of International Law, and author of "Digest of International Law." The Ohio Women's Hall of Fame honor women who have played a significant role in Ohio's history through their trailblazing contributions, and who serve as inspiration and role models for future generations. The Hall of Fame is administered by the Women's Bureau of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, which began the program in 1978. View on Ohio Memory.

Fisher was a highly decorated African American soldier during and after World War I; he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, Purple Heart, Mexican Service Medal, World War I Victory Medal and Army Commendation Medal for his services.       Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

      1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
      2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
      3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
      4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
      5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
      6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
        Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
