Description: Dated March 25, 1938, this is a photograph of a drawing of a combat scene from the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The Battle of Fallen Timbers occurred on August 20, 1794, in Greenville, Ohio, where United States Army General Anthony Wayne defeated an American Indian Confederacy, which included members of the Miami, Shawnee, Delaware, and Ottawa Nations. This battle lead to the Treaty of Greenville, signed on August 3, 1795, in which area tribes relinquished control of much of modern-day Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Lithograph titled "The Battle of Stone River or Murfreesboro," January 2-4, 1863, drawn by Alfred Edward Mathews. The Battle of Stones River (also called the Second Battle of Murfreesboro) took place between December 31, 1862, and January 2, 1863. It was considered a Union victory, but had a very high percentage of casualties on both sides. Noted on the lithograph are numbers representing troops of the 19th Ohio, 9th Kentucky, 79th Indiana, and 11th Kentucky, as well as General Sam Beatty and staff. Mathews (1831-1874) was born in Bristol, England, but moved with his family to settle in Rochester, Ohio, when he was two years old. He was working as a schoolteacher in Alabama when the Civil War broke out, and returned north to enlist in the 1st Ohio Artillery in August 1861. He later joined the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in battles including Corinth, Stone River, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. During his three-year enlistment he drew numerous sketches of scenes he witnessed, which were made into lithographs and sold, including publication in Harper's Weekly. He moved west following the war and continued his work as an artist, until his sudden death at the age of 43. He is buried on his ranch near Longmount, Colorado. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows two young women sitting on a small island in a river, taken at Battle Island near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. This area was the site of a 1782 battle where American Indian and British troops defeated Colonel William Crawford's American militia. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a traveling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: This broadside, printed in 1791, commemorates the Columbian Tragedy, a reference to the Battle of the Wabash, also known as "St. Clair's Defeat." The battle occurred on November 4, 1791, near several Miami villages along the Wabash River in what is now Mercer County, Ohio. At daybreak that morning, a large alliance of American Indians, led by Shawnee chief Weyapiersenwah (Blue Jacket) and Miami chief Mishikinakwa (Little Turtle), surprised and overwhelmed an American army of about 1,600 men under Major General Arthur St. Clair, wounding or killing over half of the unprepared troops. The conflict is known as the greatest Indian victory over American military forces in the nation's history. 39 officers, whose names are listed on this broadside, were killed, along with over 900 soldiers. Also included on the broadside are engravings of Major General Richard Butler, who was killed in the battle, and a scene titled "Bloody Indian Battle Fought at Miami Village, Nov. 4, 1791," as well as a lengthy funeral elegy.. The location of the Columbian Tragedy is now the site of Fort Recovery State Memorial and the village of Fort Recovery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This black-and-white photograph shows a group of seven soldiers in battle gear walking behind a tank. Their semi-crouched postures indicates that they are ready for battle. Tall, narrow trees are visible in the background; many of them have what appears to be hanging vines. At least one tree with palm-like foliage is visible. The image is part of the Robert S. Beightler Audiovisual Collection, which documents General Beightler's activities and the service of the 37th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II. This photograph likely was taken during the division's service in the Solomon Islands or the Philippines. Beightler took command of the 37th Infantry Division in fall 1940. He was the only National Guard officer to lead a division through training and combat duties, retaining command more continuously than any other World War II division commander. After the war, Beightler was one of two Major-Generals in the National Guard to continue serving with the regular army. The 37th Infantry was nicknamed the Buckeye Division because it originally comprised Ohio National Guard units. The division went into combat in April 1943 on Guadacanal, Solomon Islands, and spent over 600 days in action before the end of the war, more combat time than any other division. Fought on September 17, 1862, it still ranks as the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. Over 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing after twelve hours of savage combat.
