Description: Photograph showing University Hall, located on the main campus of the Ohio State University. Built in 1874, University Hall was the first and main building on the OSU campus, housing classrooms as well as faculty and student housing. The building was demolished in 1971 but replaced with a replica by 1976 that is still in use today. The photograph was taken by the Baker Art Gallery of Columbus, Ohio, a major photographic studio from the 1880s through World War II. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photo taken between 1935-1943, original date unknown. Marietta College is one of Ohio's oldest continually operating institutions of higher education. In 1830 the Reverend Luther Bingham, a pastor in the Congregationalist Church, established the Institute for Education. Local citizens in Marietta then created the Marietta Collegiate Institute and Western Teachers' Seminary, a non-denominational institution. In 1835, this college became known simply as Marietta College. Throughout its history, Marietta College has emphasized a commitment to a liberal arts education. The institution has desired to create a well-rounded student, knowledgeable in a wide variety of subjects. Marietta was the first permanent settlement of the United States of America in the territory north and west of the Ohio River. Originally known as Adelphia, meaning "brotherhood," Marietta was the first settlement founded by the Ohio Company of Associates in the Northwest Territory in 1788. The company's investors renamed the community after Queen Marie Antoinette of France, in honor of France's contributions to the American victory in the American Revolution. Description: Dated June 16, 1897, this is a diploma for Arthur Kelton Lawrence from The Ohio State University for earning a degree in pharmacy. The document is signed by Vice President of the Board of Trustees William I. Chamberlain, President of the University James Hulme Canfield, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees Alexis Cope. Arthur Kelton Lawrence (1877-1954) was the son of Thomas Lawrence and Martha Hartway Lawrence. Martha escaped from slavery and was taken in by the Kelton family in Columbus, for whom Thomas worked. Shortly after earning this degree, Arthur mustered into volunteer service with the 9th Battalion, Ohio Infantry, as a hospital steward during the Spanish American War. Following his service, he moved to Kansas and began practicing medicine before returning to Columbus and continuing his practice. View on Ohio Memory.

It stated that a university was to be build North of the Ohio River in the Miami Valley. Miami is a co-educational public research university, founded in 1809. Description: University Hall as seen from the west bank of the Olentangy River looking northwest. The Ohio State University was established in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, a land-grant university. University Hall opened in September 1873 and it was the first building on the campus. In addition to being the first classroom building, it also housed the library, administrative offices, apartments for faculty, dormitory rooms for male students as well as a chapel. In 1968, due to lack of structural integrity, the building was deemed unsafe and everything was moved out of it. It was torn down in 1971. The new University Hall that was completed in 1976 stands in almost the same spot and was designed to look exactly like the original building on the outside. View on Ohio Memory.
