Sunset over mountains photograph  Save
Description: Taken in 1971 by U.S. Army medic Charles Tweel, this photograph shows a sunset over mountains in Vietnam, with trees in the foreground defoliated by Agent Orange, a military-grade herbicide used so that firebases had no cover or workable land. This photograph is part of the Charles Tweel Collection (AV 324) at the Ohio History Connection. Charles Tweel grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University. After graduation in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a non-combatant, first training as a medic at Fort Sam Huston, followed by nine months of additional training at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He finished his training as a Specialist 3 and 91C, MOS, and went on to serve in Bamberg, Germany, with combat engineers for one year. In January 1971, Tweel served in Vietnam with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion (Air Mobile), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, based out of Camp Evans near Phu Bai, north of Hue, until December of that year. Tweel spent most of his service on various firebases as the medic in charge, and occasionally shared firebases with South Vietnamese soldiers. He also visited MedCAP stations (Medical Civic Action Programs) where he treated civilians. Tweel received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement, and was promoted to Specialist 5 in 1971. After discharge from the Army, he went to medical school and was in private practice as a family practitioner from 1979-2016, and now works part-time in inner city medical clinics in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, South Carolina. Description: This photograph shows the Dickinson Cattle Company's 300 acre ranch in Barnesville, Ohio. The photographs in the Community Profiles Collection, images of Ohio's cities, towns, and villages, were taken by the Ohio Film Commission. The Ohio Film Commission was established in 1979 to promote Ohio to the filming industry as a diverse place to film and a home to specialists with a wide range of film-making skills, including actors and set crews. The commission worked to bring to Ohio such films as Rain Man, Eight Men Out, City of Hope, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Deer Hunter, among others filmed in Ohio. The commission's functions included scouting locations, arranging support services and helping in-state filmmakers to make and export their work. In 2002, the commission was eliminated as a cost-saving measure. The Division of Travel and Tourism absorbed all functions. View on Ohio Memory.

Ghost Orchard canal photograph  Save
Description: Dated ca. 1930-1943, this photograph shows an area of the lower basin in Newton Township, Pike County, known as the Ghost Orchard basin. A caption on the photograph's reverse reads "Below Jasper. See "folklore" sent in by Mrs Davis. see letter attached "Ghost Orchard Basin." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Landscape Model for the School for the Blind  Save
Description: This is a photograph of a model built for the Ohio State School for the Blind to be used as a teaching tool. The Ohio State Institution for the Education of the Blind was established in April of 1837 and by July of 1837 began instruction in rented rooms. The first school building was built in 1839, and could accommodate sixty students. This photograph, ca. 1935-1943 shows the four story sandstone structure in the Second Roman style of architeture with a Mansard roof. It is located on the corner of Parsons Avenue, and East Main Street in Columbus, Ohio and first opened it's doors on May 21, 1874. Early in the 20th century, the Ohio Department of Education assumed control and the name of the school was changed to the Ohio School for the Blind. In 1953, the school moved to it's current location on North High Street near Morse Road. The building has undergone several renovations, and once had a central tower reached an additional three stories, and pointed spires on the north and south ends. It has since been occupied by the Ohio Highway Patrol and then by Columbus Environmental Health. View on Ohio Memory.
