Description: This photograph is a draft of a map for New Philadelphia (1938), which was created for potential use in The Ohio Guide, and is covered with pencil marks, arrows and notes. A the top right corner is a North arrow, beneath which says "Ohio Guide, Federal Writers' Project 1938". The map is approximately centered on the Tuscarawas County Courthouse on the Corner of High Avenue and Broadway Street. It depicts the Tuscarawas River and Tuscora Park, as well as the C & P Railroad tracks, the abandoned Ohio Canal, and the East Avenue and Fair Street Cemeteries. From 1935 to 1942, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), through its Federal Writers' Project created The American Guide Series, which included forty-eight state guides, as well as supplemental guides for large cities, etc. The state guides are divided into three sections. In the first section are general essays about the state on things such as agriculture, culture, history, industry, religion, etc. The second section contains an overview of the various cities and towns around the state, as well as enumerating various points of interest. The last section is dedicated to various tours around the state. The tourist is taken from city to city, with turn by turn directions, and descriptions of what can be seen along the way. While much of the country has grown and changed since the guides were written, it is surprising how much remains, and sometimes more surprising what has been lost. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image is a reproduction of a map of the United States created in 1820 by cartographer John Melish (1771-1822.) the map is included in C.V. Lasvoisne's "A Complete Genealogical, Historical, Chronological and Geographical Atlas" (Philadelphia: M. Carey & Son, 1820). The original print was a color lithograph. Melish titled his map " United States of America compiled from the latest & best Authorities." The map scale is 120 miles to the inch. The map depicts the area bounded by New Brunswick, Canada, on the east; Missouri Territory on the west; the Great Lakes region (Canada and the U.S.) on the north; and Florida and present-day northern Mexico on the south. John Melish (1771-1822) was born in Scotland and apprenticed to a cotton maker. His job brought him to America at various times, and he settled permanently in Philadelphia in 1811. He wrote extensively of his travels in America during the early 19th century and became one of his adopted country's best cartographers during this period. Description: This image is a reproduction of a military map created by cartographer John Melish and included in his "Military and Topographical Atlas of the United States Including the British Possessions and Florida" (published in 1813 and 1815). The visual components of Melish's atlas depict areas affected by the War of 1812, and the text vividly describes their geography. "Map of the Seat of War in North America" accompanies the atlas' first chapter, "Description of the Seat of War in North America." The map includes four of the Great Lakes in their entirety (only the tip of Lake Superior is represented); the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence; the Atlantic Ocean to the edge of Newfoundland and the tip of Delaware; "Upper" and "Lower Canada;" all or part of fifteen states (including Ohio); Michigan Territory; and the eastern edges of Illinois Territory and Indiana Territory. The map shows the mileage between cities, towns, and settlements. It also includes a table of population. Its dimensions are 21.5 x 15.5 inches. The Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863) was the final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. In a series of maneuvers, Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate army of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton into the defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. When two major assaults (May 19 and May 22, 1863) against the Confederate fortifications were repulsed with heavy casualties, Grant decided to besiege the city beginning on May 25. With no reinforcement, supplies nearly gone, and after holding out for more than forty days, the garrison finally surrendered on July 4. This action (combined with the capitulation of Port Hudson on July 9) yielded command of the Mississippi River to the Union forces, who would hold it for the rest of the conflict. The Confederate surrender following the siege at Vicksburg is sometimes considered, when combined with Gen. Robert E. Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the previous day, the turning point of the war. Description: Map showing the seat of war during the Civil War, 1861-65, from "The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant," 1885. The American Civil War was one of the greatest conflicts in American history. It began on April 12, 1861, with the Battle of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The conflict resulted from tensions between the North and the South, principally over the issues of slavery and its expansion, state's rights, and regional economic competition. During 1864, Grant assumed command of all Union forces. To win the war, he believed that the Union military had to defeat the Confederate military and force it to surrender, so in the face of major losses, he repeatedly attacked, refusing to retreat like earlier Union armies had done. Grant's strategy was successful, and Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865. Following the war, Ohio veterans Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and William McKinley all were elected to the presidency of the United States. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a map of mine fire territory in New Straitsville, Ohio. The map shows territory affected by the mine fires. This photo is from the small collection 5676, coal mine fire, New Straitsville, Ohio. Photographs from the small collection 5676 document smoke rising from the underground fires, men who were possibly employees of the WPA working to stop the spread of the fire, a map of the territory affected by the mine fires and a street scene in New Straitsville, Ohio. The photos were taken March 7 and 8, 1938 by Walter E. Burton. The mine fires are said to have started November 13, 1884, when striking miners pushed burning cars into a mine, during a strike over wages between the New Straitsville Mining Company's management and mine workers. A small group of union members decided to sabotage the mines. Cars filled with oil-soaked timber were set on fire and were pushed into a mine owned by the New Straitsville Mining Company. The fire quickly spread to the coal seam underground. Reportedly, the coal seam was fourteen feet across and extended an undetermined distance into the Earth. It took several days for the fire to be discovered. By that point, it was too late to stop the fire's spread. As a result of the fire, the mine closed. The New Straitsville mine fire has raged ever since 1884. In 1936, the WPA began work to stop the spread of the fire by building barriers across burning veins of coal. In 1938, nearly 350 men were employed on the project, which then was estimated to cost less than $1,000,000. Under the direction of James R. Cavanaugh, a veteran mine fire fighter, tunnels were driven through veins in the path of the fire, and were filled with a clay-water mixture or similar non-burning material. The mines fires affected coal deposits in Hocking and Perry Counties in southeastern Ohio. It was estimated that by 1938 the coal destroyed, more than two hundred square miles, was worth fifty million dollars. In 2003, smoke began to emerge from the soil of the Wayne National Forest, 119 years after the fire began. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: 3" x 4" photograph of an Ohio electrical map from a collection of models for the Ohio State School for the Blind. The map is constructed of one-quarter inch plywood. Grooved boundaries in the wood can be easily traced by a finger. County names are listed on the each side of map in braille. County seats are marked by a Mallory jack inserted in the plywood and wired to an electric buzzer. The Ohio map has 88 counties and county seats. Making a correct connection between the county and its county seat will result in a loud buzzer sound. For instance, placing of the plugs in the Columbus and Franklin county jacks will respond in a loud buzzer. No response is obtained if placed in the wrong jack. There was a similar electrical map of the United States. The model is width 59.5", height 49". Photographs and descriptions of models were included in the book "Models for the Blind," compiled by workers of the Ohio Writers' Program. The book was meant as a guide, to be used in the building and study of models, and as documentation of the achievements at the Ohio State School for the Blind. The models were a result of research, design and construction by employees of the Works Projects Administration. Models were made of durable materials to withstand regular usage. The average cost of labor for larger models was $45. A special room was built to store the models where teachers could borrow them to be used in classroom instruction. In 1837, the Ohio government established the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind. This institution was the predecessor of the Ohio State School for the Blind. It was the first public school for the blind in the United States. It was the first in the nation to be created and maintained entirely by the State government. The school opened its doors in 1839, and it was located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Any blind children residing in Ohio could attend the institution. Eleven students enrolled at the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind this first year. The school initially had a maximum capacity of sixty students, but upon moving to a new building in 1874, more than three hundred students could attend at one time. Between 1839 and 1901, 2,058 students enrolled at the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind, with 339 attending in 1901 alone. In the early 1900s, the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind became known as the Ohio State School for the Blind, and the Ohio Department of Education assumed control of the school. In 1953, the school moved ten miles north of its original location to its present home. In 2005, 126 students enrolled in the Ohio State School for the Blind. Students as young as three and as old as twenty-one years of age attended the school. Students could receive their entire education (kindergarten through high school) at the institution.
