    Keith's Theater photograph  Save
Description: Located Walnut St., between Fifth and Sixth Sts., Fountain Square, B. F. Keith's Theater occupied the site of a theater built on a Fountain Square alley in the 1880s. A Fountain Square Theater by James W. McLaughlin occupied the site from 1892 to 1899. J. M. Wood's Columbia Theater moved the entrance to Walnut St. in 1909. Keith's, an 18-story tower by Rapp and Rapp of Chicago, replaced the Columbia in 1921. Redevelopment of Fountain Square in the 1960s demolished the building entirely. Reverse reads: "Back of Keith's Theater, which was the old Columbia Theater, Walnut Street, Cincinnati Ohio. Showing the masks of the drama near top." View on Ohio Memory.

    Cincinnati Public Library photograph  Save
Description: This photograph shows the reading room and four-story atrium of the Cincinnati Public Library, Cincinnati, Ohio, ca. 1935-1943. This photograph was taken from top level at the back corner of the atrium, facing towards the front of the building. This building which is now referred to as the “Old Main” Public Library, was located at 629 Vine Street (west side), between 6th and 7th Streets. Completed in 1874 and designed by architect James W. McLaughlin, the building was considered one of the most magnificent public libraries in the country. This area pictured here had five levels of cast-iron alcoves. Visible is the catalog desk (center, right) and a bust of James Murdoch (1811-1893), Cincinnati actor and public speaker (bust located under the "Fiction" sign, lower left corner). It is one of the few statues that survived the move to the “New Main” and can be found in the Literature & Languages section. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is now one of the largest and busiest public libraries in the world and operates 41 branch locations. The library began as a subscription library in 1802. On March 14, 1853, it became the Cincinnati Public Library. View on Ohio Memory.

Great Water Carnival in Machinery Hall  Save
Description: Reverse reads: "Great Water Carnival. Cincinnati, Ohio 1890." This photographic reproduction shows a long building, with an arched ribbing over a canal. One small and one larger boat hold about 100 people. In the background, there appears to be storage for some wheeled equipment, and a sign which may read "Implements". Machinery Hall was built from Twelfth (12th) to Fifteenth (15th) Streets just north of Plum Street, straddling a section of the Miami and Erie Canal (at Mile 248) in 1888 for the Cincinnati Centennial Exposition (an industrial exposition) for 300 feet. It was designed by James W. McLaughlin and the waterway beneath this structure was briefly renamed the Venetian Canal. The Exposition began July 4th and officially lasted 100 days, but many events took place before and after. It was well regarded, and considered a success, but hardly made enough money to even cover expenses. More information needed as to the actual Water Carnival in the photograph, which was apparently held in Machinery Hall before it was dismantled. View on Ohio Memory.
