Description: Posed photograph showing two men in the office of what appears to be a pharmacy. They look together at a page from a prescription pad, and on the shelves behind them are numerous compounds, tinctures, and medicine bottles. A majority of the bottles come from the Columbus Pharmacal Company, while others are produced by Parke E. Davis and Co. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

The hospital was built in 1879 on Guerley Farm under the name "Branch Hospital for Contagious Diseases," and was meant specifically for tuberculosis patients. As the disease spread, more buildings were necessary and the complex became the Cincinnati Tubercular Hospital. In 1945, the name was changed again to the Dunham Hospital in honor of Dr. Henry Kennon Dunham, one of the country's leading researchers into the causes and cures of tuberculosis. He served as the hospital's director from 1909 to 1940. Once a cure was discovered in the 1940s, the number of tuberculosis patients decreased dramatically, and the hospital was no longer needed. This building, along with most others on the property, was demolished in 1973 to make way for the Dunham Recreation Complex. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of Dr. Arthur K. Lawrence in the rear room of his three-room office at 681 East Long Street in the Williams Building, Columbus, Ohio. He is surrounded by medical equipment. Arthur Kelton Lawrence (1877-1954) was the son of Thomas Lawrence and Martha Hartway Lawrence. Martha escaped from slavery and was taken in by the Kelton family in Columbus, who also employed Thomas. The two were married in 1864. Lawrence served as a hospital steward in the 9th Battalion of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. After the war, Lawrence became a doctor and established a medical practice in Columbus. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The interior of a drug store in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. "Frank Stutz" is written on the arch. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas.
