Description: During the War of 1812, General William Hull ordered the construction of a road connecting his troops at Detroit with supply bases located in Ohio. Beginning in Dayton and passing through Urbana on its way to Detroit, Hull's Road helped advance settlement in the northwestern corner of Ohio. Many soldiers who served under Hull also returned following the War of 1812 to claim the choicest parcels of land and territory that they had first laid eyes upon while marching to Detroit along Hull's Road. The Battle of Lake Erie, the decisive American victory over the British fleet in the War of 1812, took place on September 10, 1813. Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry led the American fleet and wrote in a report to General William Henry Harrison the famous phrase, "We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop." Description: This is a portrait of William Hull (1753-1825), the governor of the Michigan Territory beginning in 1805. Before his service in the Northwest Territory, Hull achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel in the American Revolution. During the War of 1812, while still governor, Hull surrendered approximately 2,000 soldiers and 30 cannons on August 16, 1812, rather than going to battle to defend the city of Detroit, even though his troops outnumbered the British forces. As a result of his actions, Hull faced a court martial board during the winter of 1814-1815. He was drummed out of the Army and retired to Massachusetts. View on Ohio Memory.

Simon Perkins (1771-1844) played an active part in the War of 1812, including defending the northwestern portion of Ohio from native and British attack following William Hull's surrender. From 1826 to 1833, he participated in the Ohio Board of Canal Commissioners. His principal job on the board was to raise funds for canal building by selling state bonds. Description: Fort Amanda s built to defend Ohio during the War of 1812. Originally built in the fall of 1812 by Kentucky troops under the command of Lt. Col. Robert Pogue, the fort was enlarged to almost double the original size during the spring of 1813 by Ohio militia soldiers under the command of Capt. Daniel Hosbrook. A fifth blockhouse was added during the second phase of construction as well as several cabins and storage buildings. The walls stood 11 feet above the ground. Located on the banks of the Auglaize River, Fort Amanda served as a major supply depot during the war. A diary kept by Ensign William Schillinger of the Ohio militia gives us a daily account of weather conditions, activities at the fort and his personal thoughts and observations. These and other recently discovered writings have given us the names of every man stationed at Fort Amanda during its operation, including the first African-American in the area - David, Pogue's servant whom he brought with him from Kentucky.
