Description: This photograph shows four men behind Foster Shumaker's Piano Shop in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. From left to right, the singers are Sid Martin, George Kinley and Harry Kinley. Foster Shumaker, owner of the music shop, plays the piano. Photograph from the collection of Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: Two photographs of singer/songwriter Roger Miller were taken during a performance at the 1968 Ohio State Fair. Best known for his songs "King Of The Road," "Dang Me," and "Engine Engine No. 9," Miller won eleven Grammy Awards. Miller (1936-1992) also wrote songs for the Disney movie Robin Hood and a Broadway musical, Big River, based on Mark Twain's The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn. Description: Photograph showing a student choir performing on the day of James A. Rhodes' inauguration to a fourth term as governor, January 8, 1979. Rhodes was born on September 13, 1909, in Coalton, Ohio. He began his political career by winning election to the school board of Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, then serving as Columbus city auditor. In 1943, he was elected mayor of Columbus, an office he held from 1944 until 1952. Rhodes served as Ohio Auditor from 1952 until 1962, when he won election to his first term as Ohio governor. During his four terms as governor (1962-1970 and 1974-1982), Rhodes oversaw the building of airports, state office buildings, prisons, community colleges, museums and other public structures. He is also notable as the governor who ordered Ohio National Guard troops to Kent State University during a series of student protests against the Vietnam War. On May 4, 1970, the guardsmen fired into a crowd of protestors, killing four and injuring nine. Rhodes retired from politics following an unsuccessful run for a fifth term in 1986, and died March 4, 2001. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Certificate from the Columbus Boy Choir School in receipt of a contribution from the Clinton League for $15 towards the education of Bruce Butterfield. This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. Mary Schafer, historian for the Clinton League (earlier called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1948-1953. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, between 1938 and 1953, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, in 1875, Katherine showed an interest in music and theater at an early age, possibly influenced by her father's participation in the A.G. Field Minstrel Show for many years. She made her first public appearance at age five as a little midshipman in "Pinafore" in Lancaster. She later appeared at the Schultz Opera House in Zanesville, Ohio, where she sang selections from "Pinafore." At age twelve, she made her first professional appearance as Josephine from "Pinefore," and soon after enrolled in the Cincinnati College of Music. Katherine graduated at age eighteen and earned the Springer Gold Medal for her voice. After graduation, she performed in operas in Kentucky and worked for the Airon Opera Company and later married a tenor in the company, Charles Geis, in 1895. Geis was involved in many civic organizations, such as the League of Women Voters, Business and Professional Women's Clubs, and City Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a member of the Board of County Visitors, pianist and director for the Weller Theatre Orchestra, member and president for two years at the Thursday Morning Club, and forerunner of the Women's Choral Club, was its second president and served as director for many years. Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
