Description: Reverse reads: “Greene County, Xenia, Ohio, Oct. 13, 1936 State 14-29-992 WPA 11355 - Ohio Soldiers & Sailors Orphan’s Home. View of Tile Yard, where the concrete tiles are being made for the storm sewer being installed in Home Grounds.” Established in 1869, the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home was established by the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization of Union soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. Originally, the institution was shelter to children who had lost their fathers during the American Civil War. Later, the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home was open to orphans of all military conflicts. Children at the institution received a traditional education, and the boys received military training. In 1901, Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home became the largest the institution of its kind in the world, with nine hundred residing children. The institution ceased operation in 1997. Description: A group of boys poses on the steps outside of the Godman Guild House in Columbus, Ohio. A sign advertises services including a free public library, free kindergarten, public baths and a district nurse. In 1898, Anna B. Keagle, a high school and Sunday School teacher in the Flytown neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and fourteen others became neighborhood activists and rented half of a brick double on West Goodale Street. In 1900 the group set out to build a sufficiently large settlement house. Henry C. Godman of the Godman Shoe Company gave $10,000 to the building fund, and construction was completed in November. The Godman Guild provided English classes, employment opportunities, children's programming and needs assessment. The District Nurses' Association used the Guild as a distributing point for free milk into the 1930s and the Guild pioneered the recreation center movement, conducting the first supervised playground in Columbus. The Guild opened the first public baths in the city and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry provided free dental care for children and adults. Godman Guild also founded an exclusively African Americans camp, Camp Wheeler in Chesterville, Ohio, 51 miles north of the city. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph taken for the Columbus Free Press showing volunteers at a Habitat for Humanity home under construction. According to the sign in front of the home, it is a joint project of the NBD Bank and the Ohio State University College of Business MBA Program, being built for the Jenjer family. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable homes for families. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: This image of an early fire engine and firefighters in Cincinnati, Ohio, is from the "Illustrated London News." Observers in a tower note smoke in the distance and ring a bell to sound the alarm. The man in the back uses a firefighting trumpet, used to "call out" or announce the fire to assemble the call men. The image illustrates the technological limitations of early fire departments, even in fairly large cities. Before the introduction of horse-drawn fire engines in the mid-19th century, and later fire trucks, following the invention of the automobile, most fire engines were maneuvered by men. In 1853, the city of Cincinnati became the first to employ a professional fire department, made up of 100% full-time, paid employees. "Illustrated London News" had a wide circulation in the 19th century, and collections of issues were often bound together and saved by families so that children could read them for years to come. This image comes from a detached page that was hand-colored. Such illustrations are valuable, and were sometime separated from intact issues to be sold by antique dealers. View on Ohio Memory.
