The bronze relief sculptures on the walls are part of a series by Bruce Wilder Saville, an artist and professor at the Ohio State University, depicting World War I scenes. Description: Photograph showing nine women standing along the "Road to Remembrance," a designated stretch of the "River Road" (possibly Olentangy River Road) where members of the Columbus Federation of Women's Clubs planted trees. This effort was likely in honor of those Columbus soldiers who were killed during World War I. This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. H. V. Cottrell, historian for the Clinton League (sometimes called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1938-1943. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Description: Hand-colored photograph of the USS Marietta with caption reading "U.S.S. Marietta, July 14, 1910, 12-19-17." There is a hand-written inscription on the lower left corner that reads "Dear Mrs. Schoonover, Your "Marietta" and my "Marietta" are quite different 'animiles'." On the lower right corner is written "USS Marietta, Built at the Union Ironworks, San Francisco, CA under the supervision of [not legible]." The USS Marietta was U.S. Navy gunboat commissioned in 1897. It was named for the city of Marietta in Washington County, Ohio. The Marietta served with the Pacific Squadron, then took a voyage around South America to join the Spanish-American War fleet near Cuba. After the Spanish-American War, the Marietta served in Asian, Caribbean, European and western Atlantic waters. During World War I, she performed convoy duties in the Atlantic Ocean. In July 1919 the Marietta was decommissioned by the U.S. Navy and sold in March 1920. View on Ohio Memory.

Homer L. Ruh portrait  Save
Description: The subject of this portrait, Homer L. Ruh of Columbus, Ohio, served in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. He trained at Camp Sheridan, Alabama, where this photograph was taken. Homer was with the 37th Infantry Division in France and Belgium from June 15, 1918, until March 23, 1919. On April 12, 1919, Ruh was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry by General John J. Pershing. After service in World War I, Ruh was a professional football player with the Columbus Panhandles (later the Columbus Tigers), an early National Football League franchise. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of 1st Lieutenant and Chaplain Charles T. Isom posed in uniform and standing in front of tent, taken during his service in World War I. Isom (1880-1943) was a graduate of Denison University and Ohio University, and served as a chaplain in World War I. He was Executive Secretary of Ohio Baptist General Association for 24 years, and worked as editor of the Ohio Baptist News. In the 1930s, he moved to Dayton where he was Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church until his death in 1943. The Ohio Baptist General Association, an organization of African American Baptist churches with its headquarters in Columbus, was founded in 1895 as the Ohio Baptist State Convention and reorganized as the Ohio Baptist General Association in 1919. 2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
