Charles Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army and, at the time of his death in 1922, was the highest-ranking African American officer in the Army. He is known for having been forced into retirement due to health concerns before the start of World War I and later riding from Wilberforce, Ohio, to Washington, D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. Description: Photograph of Frances E. Brown, seventeen months old, with her grandmother Frances Jane, the mother of Hallie Quinn Brown, who was ninety-one years old. Brown was the daughter of freed slaves Thomas and Frances Jane who were actively involved with the Underground Railroad. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University and later became Dean of Women at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Brown helped found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), was elected Secretary of Education of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900 and served as the 7th National President of the NACW. Hedgeman was the first African American woman to serve on the cabinet of a New York mayor in the 1950s and in 1963 she helped A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin plan the March on Washington. She held honorary doctorates from both Howard University and Hamline University, was an executive of the YWCA and was the author of two books: "The Trumpet Sounds" and "The Gift Of Chaos."
