Description: Caption reads: "The Old Courthouse, Dayton, Ohio. Montgomery County." Construction began on the Montgomery County Courthouse in 1847 and was completed in April 1850. The Greek Revival courthouse is allegedly in the style of the Theseum, the Greek temple of Theseus, located below the Parthenon. Cincinnati architect Howard Daniels designed the building, which cost $100,000. It was constructed of local white limestone. To prevent fires, the only wood used in the building is in the inner doors, window sashes, and furniture. The building served as the home of the Montgomery County Historical Society until March 2000. Harrison County Courthouse photograph  Save
Description: Harrison County Courthouse is located in Cadiz, Ohio. Cadiz was established in 1803. Construction for the courthouse began in 1893. Joseph W. Yost designed this and several other Ohio county courthouses. This courthouse represents a variety of architectural styles, such as Greek Revival, Second Empire, Italianate, Romanesque Revial and Beaux-Arts Classicism. Although the courthouse was finished in 1895, the county could not take possession of it right away due to a lien on the property. Rachel E. and William Greer owned a brickyard nearby and provided the bricks for the courthouse but were not paid for them. The matter was settled within a month, the lien released and the county was able to claim its new building. View on Ohio Memory.

Columbus City Hall and old Post Office building  Save
Description: The words "You Are Welcome" decorate the grounds outside the entrance to the Columbus City Hall building. In this photograph, the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse is behind and to the left of City Hall. The City Hall, located 90 West Broad Street, bounded by Gay, Front, and Broad Sts., and Riverside Drive, occupies, with its park, and entire block in the heart of the civic center. The 5-story structure of Indiana limestone, in Greco-Roman style, was designed by the Allied Architects Association of Columbus and cost $1,700,000. Three of the four sections of the building, which surround a court, were completed in 1928, and the fourth was dedicated in 1936. The hall houses various municipal departments and contains a city council chamber that originally sat more than 400 people. At night multi-colored lights played upon a fountain before the Broad Street entrance. The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, sometimes referred to as the Federal Building, is located at 85 Marconi Boulevard at the corner of Gay Street. Completed in 1934, it is the Federal Government’s contribution to the civic center. It occupies a triangular tract on the east bank of the Scioto River, and housed the main post office, Federal courts and offices, and the U.S. Weather Bureau station. The 4-story building is of sandstone and marble construction, with classic lines. Richards, McCarty & Bulford, of Columbus, designed the structure, which cost almost $1,800,000 to build. Description: Caption reads: "Darke Co., Greenville, O., Mar. 25, 1938. Court House, Broadway & W. Fourth St. Dedicated in 1874." The Darke County Courthouse, located at 504 South Broadway, just south of West 4th Street in Greenville, Ohio. Designed by Edwin May, and built by Rouser & Rouser, the building was completed in 1874. The courthouse is designed in the Second Empire style with traces of Italianate style. The rectangular building is lined with Buena Vista sandstone with a rusticated foundation and smooth stones lining the floors above. The windows were designed as arches until long rectangular panels were placed during the renovation. Above each window is a decorative head casing in the shape of an arch or pediment. A central projection on the front facade is topped by a tower. The tower contains the main entrance with pilasters on either side holding a balcony. A pediment rests at the top floor and is surmounted by a statue of Justice. The tower rises to a dome which is capped by a spire. Four stone chimneys line the sides of the courthouse. The flat roof was once a mansard and is supported by a decorative entablature. The large complex which combines the Courthouse, Sheriff's House and the Jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. View on Ohio Memory.

Lawrence County Courthouse in Ironton  Save
Description: Reverse reads: "file 10-29-39. Ironton, O. Lawrence County Court House, built in 1906." The Lawrence County Courthouse, located at 111 South 4th Street in Ironton, was completed in 1908, after 2 years of construction. The NeoClassical (Greek Revival) style building was designed by architects Richards, McCarty & Bulford and replaced the previous 2-story brick building). Constructed by the contractor J. C. Unkefer & Company, the 3-story, cut-stone building topped with a large cupola, cost $150,000 to build. The grounds of the courthouse contain several items which serve as memorials to the history of Lawrence County. Flanking the front entrance are two howitzer cannons. A replica iron furnace serves as a reminder of Ironton's roll in the Hanging Rock region, which was a leading producer of charcoal and pig iron until more modern furnaces were built elsewhere, rendering the old iron furnaces obsolete. A replica of the Statue of Liberty was presented by the Boy Scouts of America in 1951. An annex costing $2.5 million dollars was built at the rear of the building in 1978. The 3 1/2 story addition is of contemporary design and connects to the original structure by a glass ramp. The courthouse also houses the Lawrence County Bar & Library View on Ohio Memory.
