Description: This sketchbook, measuring 12 by 10 inches (30.48 by 25.40 cm) when open, is a sample of the work of Samuel Swan Walker. A native of Butler County, Walker (1806-1848) was an itinerant miniaturist during the late 1830s and 1840s. A trained doctor, he made his living traveling throughout the western and northwestern parts of the state painting portraits of well-known Ohioans and giving art lessons to wealthy patrons. Description: A family of eight poses together for this group picture. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed “Ewing Brothers” and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Colored print titled "Old Tippecanoe has come out in the West, In all the wide borders his steed is the best!" It is meant to depict William Henry Harrison's log cabin on the Ohio River in North Bend, Ohio. A barrel of hard cider is by the cabin, a flag reading "Harrison & Tyler" is flying above, and Harrison is in front greeting a wounded soldier. Harrison was the Whig candidate for President in 1840 and his running mate was John Tyler. Their campaign slogan "Old Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" referred to Harrison's defeat of the Shawnee chief, Tecumseh, at Tippecanoe Creek in 1811. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows a woman and three children looking at the rigs and horses belonging to an Amish person, possibly the Amish man walking up the street, as they visit Berlin, Ohio. The sign hanging from the shop on the left reads "[...]ls [...Ge]nuine Rail Bologna Sold Here Hot & Cold Lunches." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
