Exploits of Little John Clem illustration  Save
Description: Illustration titled "Exploits of Little John Clem," from Benson Lossings' Our Country, 1877. Johnny Clem, born John Joseph Klem, was a soldier in the service of the United States for most of his life. He was born on August 13, 1851, in Newark, Ohio. Some accounts claim that Clem first had been permitted to join the Twenty-Fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Other sources claim that Clem joined the Twenty-Second Michigan Infantry Regiment when it marched through Newark. Since Johnny Clem was too young to join the army officially, officers of the Twenty-Second Michigan contributed money to pay him a monthly wage. Soldiers provided him with a gun and uniform and trained him to be a drummer boy. Clem was finally allowed to enlist in the United States Army in May 1863, when he was only twelve. In the meantime, Clem had already participated in numerous battles and had become quite famous. View on Ohio Memory.

'Sir Henry' racehorse painting  Save
Description: Artist Edward Troye (1808-1874) painted this portrait of the racehorse Sir Henry in 1834. A famous North-South race in May 1823 pitted Sir Henry, a four-year-old colt bred owned by Col. William R. Johnson of North Carolina, against nine-year-old veteran American Eclipse, owned by Cornelius Van Ranst of New York. The race took place at Union Course, a racetrack that was located in Queens, New York, in the present-day Woodhaven neighborhood, a residential area. The competition was a best-of-three series of races; the purse was $20,000. An estimated 60,000 spectators were on hand to watch the races. Despite being several years older and carrying a weightier rider than his rival, Eclipse won two of the three four-mile heats. The painting is in oil on canvas. View on Ohio Memory.

Lower Linden Avenue in Zanesville after flood  Save
Description: Photograph showing debris on Lower Linden Avenue in Zanesville, Ohio, following the flood of 1913. In late March 1913, an unusually heavy rainstorm moved into Ohio. It rained steadily for five days and the water levels rose rapidly. By the third day of the downpour, levees were overtopped and many towns suffered disastrous flooding. When the flood waters receded, tons of mud and debris covered the streets, homes, businesses and factories of towns like Zanesville, where the Muskingum River had crested 27 feet above flood stage and water was 20 feet deep at several downtown intersections. The death toll for the disaster stood at 361, and property damages were well over $100,000,000 and 65,000 were forced to temporarily leave their homes. View on Ohio Memory.
