Description: Portrait of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company President James A. Campbell, ca. 1920-1929. James Anson Campbell was born in Ohltown, Trumbull County, Ohio, on September 11, 1854. In 1900 he co-founded the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company, later to be renamed the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, in East Youngstown with George D. Wick in 1900. Campbell spent thirty years with Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and during that time he participated in numerous charitable and civic activities. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of his contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79. Prior to founding Youngstown Sheet and Tube with George D. Wick, Campbell worked at Republic Iron and Steel Company. Campbell served as Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's first vice-president while Wick served as president. After Wick stepped down as president in May 1902, Campbell acted as president until the board of directors formally appointed him to the position in 1905. He maintained this role until 1930. During his 30 years with the company, he participated in numerous charitable and civic activities. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of Campbell's contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79. Description: James A. Campbell, President of Youngstown Sheet and Tube, at his desk, ca. 1920-1929. James Anson Campbell was born in Ohltown, Trumbull County, Ohio, on September 11, 1854. Despite achieving great affluence during his life Campbell did not come from a wealthy upbringing. The youngest of eight children, Campbell attended public schools in the Youngstown area. Upon graduating from Niles High School, Campbell attended Hiram College for a year. Although he had received an appointment to West Point, Campbell declined the appointment instead choosing to assist with his family's farm. In 1900 he co-founded the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company, later to be renamed the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, in East Youngstown with George D. Wick in 1900. Campbell spent thirty years with Youngstown Sheet and Tube and during that time he participated in numerous charitable and civic activities. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of Campbell's contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79. Description: Portrait of George D. Wick, ca. 1900-1909. Colonel George D. Wick, born June 24, 1854, in Youngstown, was a dominant figure in Youngstown's industrial, financial, and commercial development. Involved with the iron and steel industry, Wick, along with James A. Campbell, resigned from the Republic Iron and Steel Company in 1900, and they formed their own company, the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company. Wick played an active role in the rising company and served as its first president but after suffering health problems he was forced to take a leave of absence. Although he later returned to the company, Wick perished on the Titanic when it sank on April 15, 1912. View on Ohio Memory.

Three years prior to his death Campbell began to have a health problems, probably caused in part from the stress of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube-Bethlehem Steel merger trial. A heart attack claimed Campbell at his home on September 20, 1933. A daughter, Rebecca, preceded him in death by just a few months and Campbell's wife, Uretta, died just a couple of weeks later on October 2, 1933. View on Ohio Memory.

Campbell's later positions included general superintendent of the Trumbull Iron Company in Warren, Ohio, general superintendent of the Mahoning Valley Iron Company at Youngstown, and Youngstown district manager of Republic Iron and Steel Company. Description: Portrait of Frank Purnell, ca. 1930-1939. As a young man, Purnell joined the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, working in the company's city office. With James A. Campbell's recommendation, Purnell became a member of the government's steel division in Washington D.C. Purnell later returned to Youngstown as vice president of Youngstown Sheet and Tube. 2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
