Painesville, the county seat, was incorporated in 1832 and named after General Edward Paine (1746–1841), one of the early settlers of the Western Reserve, who settled in the area around 1800 and represented the region in the territorial legislature. Paine had served as a captain in the Connecticut militia during the American Revolutionary War. When the plat of land was laid in 1805 its original name was Champion after General Henry Champion. Description: Indian Lake in Logan County, Ohio, ca. 1940-1949. Indian Lake was built between 1850 and 1857 as a feeder lake for the Miami and Erie Canal. It was known as Lewistown Reservoir until 1896, when the lake was purchased by the state of Ohio for a state park. In the 1920s, S. L. Wilgus built an amusement park on the shore of the lake near Russell's Point. Attractions included a boardwalk along the lake and a roller coaster. The park closed in the 1970s. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Bicentennial barn-painting program was an inexpensive, grassroots marketing campaign that painted the official logo of the Ohio Bicentennial on a highly visible historic barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Over 2,000 farmers and landowners submitted their barn descriptions to the committee for consideration. Beginning in 1998, artist Scott Hagan spent five years painting the logos, tailored to every barn's unique character. Typically, the barn owners hosted a celebration at the completion of their barn painting. This photograph is an exterior view of Barn #76, the 76th barn that Hagan painted, located at 8249 Munson Road in Lake County. View on Ohio Memory.
