Description: This is a photograph of a wampum belt. American Indian peoples used wampum belts to record culturally significant stories and events of historic importance, such as military victories and treaties with other native peoples or white settlers. Wampum belts are made of white whelk shells and purple quahog shells fashioned into beads and woven into belts, although the term "belt" simply refers to its shape, as these were never worn. When Europeans settled New England, wampum was used as a form of currency until 1652 when the Massachusetts Bay Colony established the Boston Mint. View on Ohio Memory.
