After Dunbar's death in 1906 his mother, Matilda Dunbar, continued to live in the house until her death in 1934. In 1936 the Dunbar house became the first state memorial to honor an African American. Description: Exterior view of the home of Henry C. Shetrone, archaeologist and former director of the Ohio Archeological and Historical Society, in Columbus, Ohio. Shetrone's most important work, "The Mound-Builders," published in 1930, was a comprehensive synthesis of Ohio's mound-building cultures in relation to what was then known about the archaeology of eastern North America. Description: View from the south side of the hilltop earthworks at the Fort Hill nature preserve in Highland County, Ohio, April 1941. The hilltop earthworks were constructed by the pre-historic Hopewell people, 100 B.C.-A.D. 500. Fort Hill became a state memorial in 1932 when 330 acres were purchased. Between 1937 and 1953 more acreage was added until the site was 1,200 acres. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed park structures in the 1930s and the museum opened in 1968. Since the early nineteenth century glassmaking has been one of the major industries of Ohio, and Ohio glass holds an important place in the development of the industry in the United States. According to Rhea Mansfield Knittle of Ashland, Ohio, whose book "Early American Glass" was published in 1927, the first glass house in Ohio was a Zanesville organized by a group of citizens and incorporated May 13, 1815, as the White Glass Works. Description: Monument on the site of Fort Recovery in Mercer County, Ohio, ca. 1955-1970. The monument was built in 1913. The fort was built in 1793-1794 by soldiers under the command of General Anthony Wayne on the site where soldiers under General Arthur St. Clair's command were defeated by a confederacy American Indian tribes. Wayne's forces succeeded in defending the fort and bringing an end to military conflict between the region's American Indian tribes and settlers in the territory that became the state of Ohio. Description: Home of abolitionist John Rankin in Ripley, Ohio, ca. 1950-1970. The house, built in 1828, sits on a hill overlooking the Ohio River and served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Rankin and his wife Jane (identified in some later records as Jean) worked with their neighbors to assist thousands of slaves to escape to freedom. The house was purchased by the state of Ohio in 1938 and ten years later the Ohio Historical Society opened the refurbished site to the public. It is now a National Historic Landmark.
