Description: The Union County Courthouse was built next to the county jail in 1880. The land had been purchased in 1871 for the jail, and when two more lots were purchased in 1880, the courthouse construction began 100 days later in September of that year. The architect was David W. Gibbs of Toledo, Ohio, who also designed four other county courthouses in Ohio. The contractors were Karst and Woodruff. The bell tower reached 168 feet in height and the original clock was by Howard and Co. of Boston, Massachusetts. It was wound once a week by the courthouse janitor until 1942. At that time a rusty cable broke and one of the weights fell through the skylight of the rotunda, narrowly missing a court reporter. After that mishap, the clock was electrified. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Taken by naturalist and nature conservator Ralph Ramey at Smith Cemetery State Nature Preserve in Plain City, Ohio, this is a photograph of whorled rosinweed (Silphium trifoliatum), also called three-leaved rosinweed. Characterized by eight to thirteen thin, yellow petals, whorled rosinweed grows predominantly in prairies, on stream banks, hillsides, and flat open areas, and is a common feature of Ohio prairies. Naturalist and photographer Ralph Ramey documented plants, animals, insects, and other notable features of the Ohio landscape on his travels throughout Ohio. Ramey (1928 - 2019) was a prolific writer and authored "Fifty Hikes in Ohio: Walks, Hikes, and Backpacking Trips throughout the Buckeye State," often illustrating his books and lectures with his photographs. Ramey spent time working for the Franklin County Park District, the Miami County Park District, and served as Director of the Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He also worked as the chief of the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, before retiring in 1994. View on Ohio Memory.
