Description: This photograph shows a bridge over the Grand River in northeastern Ohio. The Grand River is a tributary of Lake Erie and initially flows from Trumbull County. It continues through Ashtabula County and then through Lake County, where it ends in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: William Woodward (1768-1833) and his wife Abigail first started as the Woodward Free Grammar School as an effort of educated the city's poor. The growth of the public school system around 1829 caused him to reevaluate his goals for the school. Additional land was purchased, and a new school built. The Woodward High School of Cincinnati opened October 1831 in a two story brick building on Franklin Street in the Bond Hill community of Cincinnati, and was the first high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. The school's thorough education caused trustee's to apply to collegiate powers, which were granted. Woodward's College Department opened January 1936, in the same building as the high school, and alumni of the school earned degrees at graduation. The school continue to grow, and by 1841, a third story was added, and plans were undertaken to construct bigger facilities, which were completed in 1855. "Old Woodward", designed by John R. Hamilton in the English - Gothic style, was located on the corner of Woodward Street and Sycamore Street, and was one of the first buildings in America to use terracotta as exterior decoration. Around 1850, public schools were continuing to grow, and it was becoming apparent that the need for the Woodward as a private institution was waning. The high school was suspended, so that the college portion of the school could survive on the remaining funds. Money ran out, however, and the College Department closed in 1851. Not wanting to close the school entirely, especially with a new building underway, the board decided reinstate the high school and joined the Cincinnati public school system later that same year, changing their name to the Cincinnati Woodward High School. In 1860, the remains of William Woodward and his wife were placed in a stone vault on school grounds near the Broadway Street entrance, to honor his dedication to the school and in 1878, a monument and statue were placed over the tomb. A new building was constructed on Sycamore Street in between 1908 to 1910. The Second Renaissance Revival-style structure was designed by local architect Gustav Drach. In 1950, this building became the Abigail Cutter Junior High School, and Woodward High School moved to a new building on Reading Road. From 1976 to 2010, the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) used the building on Sycamore Street, which plans to move to new facilities adjacent to Cincinnati Music Hall in the fall of 2010. The future of the Sycamore Street building currently remains undecided. Notable people associated with the school include: Joseph Ray, the school's first principal, teacher of mathmatics and author a series of algebra textbooks; William McGuffy, teacher and author of many well known spellers and readers; and former U.S. President William Taft, who is an alumni (1874). It is also interesting to note that William Woodward's home was built on the site of the Sycamore Street school, in 1832 (before the school was built). The house was lived in by Henry Rucher, and early principal and teacher, and was commonly known as the Rucher House. From 1856 - 1863, Levi Coffin, "President" of the Underground Railway, and his wife Catherine, lived in this home. The home later served as the Good Samaritan Hospital for a short time, and St. Luke's Hospital, before eventually being demolished in order to build the new school, in 1907. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated October 6, 1936, this photograph shows the photosynthesis laboratory at Antioch College in Greene County, Ohio, in Yellow Springs. The photograph's caption reads "The photosynthesis laboratory C.F. Kettering Foundation. Here students have opportunity to take part in important scientific research into the nature of chlorophyll." Antioch College was founded in 1852 as the first nonsectarian, co-educational institution in the nation to offer the same educational opportunities to both men and women. Description: Photograph of a model frontier town from a collection of models for the Ohio State School for the Blind. The typical frontier town, a fortified town of log cabins, was similar to the Roman forts built in the wooded sections of North Europe. A formidable wall around the settlement was built from sharpened wooden posts. A blockhouse, usually built in a corner of the settlement, provided storage room and as a place of last defense. The corner placement of the blockhouse, allowed access to both the inside and outside for better defense. Firing platforms could be found in the corners of the palisades. A settlement, had to have a good water supply, or could not survive. The stream in the model was probably from a spring inside the town, since streams could be polluted and diverge from their courses. Model dimensions: length 24", width 30", height 6.5". Photograph is 4.5" x 7". Photographs and descriptions of models were included in the book "Models for the Blind," compiled by workers of the Ohio Writers' Program. The book was meant as a guide, to be used in the building and study of models, and as documentation of the achievements at the Ohio State School for the Blind. The models were a result of research, design and construction by employees of the Works Projects Administration. Models were made of durable materials to withstand regular usage. The average cost of labor for larger models was $45. A special room was built to store the models where teachers could borrow them to be used in classroom instruction. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This red swallowtail Brigade Colors wool flag is of the 165th Infantry Brigade, 83rd Infantry Division of World War I. It was organized on August 25, 1917 at Camp Sherman, Ohio and demobilized February 12 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio. It is now a training unit of the United States Army. The flag is 128 cm high and the numbers, 165 and 83, are machine appliqued with white cotton fabric. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Description: The Republic Steel Corporation Collection (MSS 192) consists of 13,000 black and white photographic negatives, 2,000 color photographic negatives, and many 35 mm slides which document Republic Steel Corporation’s main production facilities and its subsidiaries, 1941-1975. This collection also includes images of social events such as company picnics, award banquets, and dances. Founded in 1899, Republic Iron and Steel Company was a steel production company based in Youngstown, Ohio, and the result of a consolidation of 34 steel mills across the United States including the Mahoning Valley’s Brown Bonnell Iron Company, Andrews Brothers and Company, and Mahoning Iron Company. From 1927-1937, Republic Iron and Steel Company expanded its reach by acquiring a number of other companies such as Trumbull Steel Company in Warren, Ohio, and Central Alloy Steel Corporation in Canton, Ohio. With its expansion, Republic Iron and Steel Company became the third largest steel producer in the United States behind United States Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Company, and changed its name to Republic Steel Corporation to reflect its new status. After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the Corporation’s production increased by 33%. This increased production continued into the 1950s and 1960s as the company continued to be one of the leading developers of steel production technology. Due to a myriad of factors including decreased demand for steel from automobile manufacturers and imported foreign steel, steel sales declined and in 1984 the Republic Steel Corporation was purchased by LTV Corporation, which led to the closure of the Youngstown plant.
