Ulysses S. Grant birthplace photograph  Save
Description: This color image shows the interior of the Ulysses S. Grant birthplace, located in Point Pleasant, Ohio. The room includes a brick fireplace, a mantel painted turquoise blue, a wooden table and serving items, a corner cabinet, and wooden bench. Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in this one-story, timber-frame home on April 27, 1822, to Jesse and Hannah Simpson Grant. The Grants settled in Point Pleasant the previous year, and Jesse took charge of the tannery located near the cottage. The cabin was removed from its foundation in Point Pleasant in 1888 and placed aboard a boat for exhibition in Cincinnati. Afterwards it was moved to Goodale Park (Columbus, Ohio) as part of the Northwest Territory centennial. During the 1890s the cabin was returned to the fairgrounds in Columbus. It remained there until 1936, when the Ohio Historical Society, under a legislative order, returned it to its original site in Point Pleasant, Ohio. The dismantling of the badly deteriorated cabin for relocation occurred in February 1936 at the Columbus Fairgrounds. The cabin was restored with period furniture and opened to public tours. The Grant Birthplace memorial is located at 1551 State Rt 232, in Point Pleasant (Clermont County), just off of U.S. Route 52, about five miles east of New Richmond. Ulysses Simpson Grant was an American military leader and the eighteenth president of the United States. He served in the Mexican War but was never happy with military life and resigned his commission in 1854. At the outbreak of the Civil War he organized a company in Galena and later accepted command of the 21st Illinois Regiment. In August 1861, President Abraham Lincoln made Grant brigadier general of volunteers. In 1864 Grant became lieutenant general commanding all the armies of the U.S. He served as U.S. president from 1869-1877. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Aerial view of the southern end of the South Bass Island in Lake Erie, the location of South Bass Island Light lighthouse. South Bass Island Light was brought into service in 1897 and is considered to be the only lighthouse in the United States to be owned by a university - the Ohio State University. It was constructed on Parker Point on the southwest corner of the island to help mark the passage from Sandusky to Toledo. In 1962 the light was deactivated and the lens was transferred to the Lake Erie Island Historical Museum. The Ohio State University took the permanent possession of the lighthouse in 1997 and currently uses it to house researchers and staff, occasionally making it available for tours. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 5, 1990. View on Ohio Memory.

Walhalla Ravine photograph  Save
Description: Photograph showing a section of Walhalla Ravine (now Walhalla Road) in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The ravine got its name from Mathias Armbruster, an early settler in the neighborhood who lived at the intersection of Walhalla and North High Street. Armbruster was a native of Germany whose interest in Norse mythology inspired the name of the ravine (after the paradise reserved for Norse warriors killed in battle) as well as several other streets in the vicinity. This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. H. V. Cottrell, historian for the Clinton League (sometimes called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1938-1943. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Inmates working in fields photograph  Save
Description: Dated ca. 1935-1965, this photograph shows inmates working in the fields at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Farming and gardening was one of the vocational trades offered to inmates at the Reformatory. In 1911, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the establishment of a separate women’s penal institution. On September 1, 1916, the Ohio Reformatory for Women opened in Marysville, Ohio, with a population of 34 inmates. When Marguerite Reilley was appointed superintendent of the Reformatory in 1935, she found dirty and unkempt inmates with excessively restricted living habits. She instituted the “human being” program which provided recreation, entertainment, jobs, and vocational training for the inmates. State Archived Series 1679 AV consists of 234 photographs which illustrate daily life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women, as well as photographs of the buildings and grounds, superintendents Marguerite Reilley and Martha Wheeler, and notorious inmate Velma West.
