Description: The Republic Steel Corporation Collection (MSS 192) consists of 13,000 black and white photographic negatives, 2,000 color photographic negatives, and many 35 mm slides which document Republic Steel Corporation’s main production facilities and its subsidiaries, 1941-1975. This collection also includes images of social events such as company picnics, award banquets, and dances. Founded in 1899, Republic Iron and Steel Company was a steel production company based in Youngstown, Ohio, and the result of a consolidation of 34 steel mills across the United States including the Mahoning Valley’s Brown Bonnell Iron Company, Andrews Brothers and Company, and Mahoning Iron Company. From 1927-1937, Republic Iron and Steel Company expanded its reach by acquiring a number of other companies such as Trumbull Steel Company in Warren, Ohio, and Central Alloy Steel Corporation in Canton, Ohio. With its expansion, Republic Iron and Steel Company became the third largest steel producer in the United States behind United States Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Company, and changed its name to Republic Steel Corporation to reflect its new status. After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the Corporation’s production increased by 33%. This increased production continued into the 1950s and 1960s as the company continued to be one of the leading developers of steel production technology. Due to a myriad of factors including decreased demand for steel from automobile manufacturers and imported foreign steel, steel sales declined and in 1984 the Republic Steel Corporation was purchased by LTV Corporation, which led to the closure of the Youngstown plant. Description: Dated 1920, this photograph shows Warren G. Harding holding a tuba on the porch of his home in Marion, Ohio, surrounded by a group of people. This photograph is part of the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection. Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States from 1921-1923, was born near Marion, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1898 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature for two terms. Harding became Lieutenant Governor in 1903 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. While unsuccessful in a run for Governor in 1910, Harding won election to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty began promoting Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His campaign, known as “The Front Porch Campaign,” was centered on low-key speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy.” Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding died from a massive heart attack and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through Auglaize County, between stations 6072 and 6240. Roads, properties, locks, bridges and other landmarks along the route are noted, including adjacent ponds and the St. Mary's River. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Eddie Rickenbacker with friends during his days as a race car driver, ca. 1909-1917. Edward Rickenbacker was born on October 8, 1890 in Columbus, Ohio. Between 1909 and 1917 he was one of the top race car drivers in the country. He raced with the Peugeot, Maxwell, and Prest-O-Lite Teams and competed several times in the Indianapolis 500. In 1917, he enlisted in the army, where he became a celebrated pilot. Rickenbacker died in July 1973 in Switzerland. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Pennsylvania #9, 4-4-2 steam locomotive, most likely at the Upper Sandusky depot. Locomotives are classified by wheel arrangement. 4-4-2 represents a configuration of four leading wheels on two axles, and is commonly known as the Atlantic or Milwaukee type. The Pennsylvania Railroad was founded in 1846 and went on to become one of the largest railroads in US history. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas.
