Description: Photograph of C. Walder Parke standing in front of a curved staircase by a stream or lake. The location of this photograph is unknown, but a Huth Seed store is visible in the background. Huth Seed Company was a major distributor of floral seeds and hardware in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Charles Walder Parke was born on July 28, 1924, and grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 intending to be a pilot during WWII, but spent most of his military career as a navigator on B-17 Flying Fortresses in the 94th Bombardment Group. Parke earned two Bronze Stars, an Air Medal with several Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his successful bombing missions, including some over Berlin. He is best known for being on board a B-17 which was shot down over France by German planes on June 25, 1944, during a non-combat mission. The crew managed to make an emergency landing, and everyone inside survived. After the war, Parke founded the Cleveland-based Laurel Industries Inc., which became a prominent supplier of antimony oxide to the plastics industry. He died of Lou-Gehrig’s Disease on September 15, 1996, at the age of 72. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image shows the front facade of the Old Medina County Courthouse, located at 99 Public Square. The old courthouse was originally built in 1841 and over the years, it has transformed to incorporate multiple architectural styles, including Greek Revival and Second Empire. It is connected by a passageway to a newer building, also called the Medina County Courthouse, which was built in 1969. It serves as a second Common Pleas Court. D.H. Description: Carte de visite of General Ivan V. Turchaninov, who served with the Union Army during the Civil War. Born to a Cossack family in Russia, Turchaninov fought at Huntsville, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga. He is most remembered for the infamous "Rape of Athens" where he permitted his troops to plunder a town whose citizens had participated in a previous defeat. Description: Photograph of the Joshua Reed Giddings Law Office, a National Historic Landmark in Jefferson, Ohio. Giddings (1795-1864) was a prominent abolitionist as well as a member of the U.S. Congress. The office was constructed adjacent to his home, the porch of which can be seen on the left-hand side of the image. The text of the historical marker reads "Joshua Reed Giddings here wrote the Republican party's first national platform, adopted at Philadelphia, June 17th, 1856. Member of Congress 1838-1858. In 1842 he defied the Atherton Gag Rule, prohibiting discussion of slavery on the floor. Censured by the House, given no opportunity for defense, he resigned. His overwhelming re-election five weeks later, and renewed defiance, restored Constitutional freedom of speech in our American Congress. Pioneer, soldier, author, patriot and statesman, a founder of the National Republican Party." The structure is alternately identified as the Law Office of Wade & Jefferson. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Reverse reads "Cinci., O., Sept. 1937. Old Foraker Home". Joseph B. Foraker's home was located at the southeast corner of Madison Road and Grandin Road in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two story stuccoed home, built in 1860, was behind Holy Angels School and used as the rectory for a church. Joseph B. Foraker, born July 5, 1846, was the 37th Governor of Ohio. His term lasted from January 11, 1886 to January 13, 1890. Foraker served two terms as a republican Senator for Ohio which lasted from 1897 to 1909, during which time he sponsored the Organic Act of 1900, otherwise known as the Foraker Act, which helped establish goverment and citizenship for Puerto Rico. He died in Cincinnati May 10, 1917 and was buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.
