Seat of War map  Save
Description: Map showing the seat of war during the Civil War, 1861-65, from "The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant," 1885. The American Civil War was one of the greatest conflicts in American history. It began on April 12, 1861, with the Battle of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The conflict resulted from tensions between the North and the South, principally over the issues of slavery and its expansion, state's rights, and regional economic competition. During 1864, Grant assumed command of all Union forces. To win the war, he believed that the Union military had to defeat the Confederate military and force it to surrender, so in the face of major losses, he repeatedly attacked, refusing to retreat like earlier Union armies had done. Grant's strategy was successful, and Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865. Following the war, Ohio veterans Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and William McKinley all were elected to the presidency of the United States. View on Ohio Memory.

Headless man photograph  Save
Description: Cabinet card photograph showing a man pictured with his own head on a platter, taken in Windsor, Great Britain, ca. 1880. The back of the photograph identifies the creator as W. Runicles, a photographic artist with a studio at 7 High St., Eton, in Windsor (the two are twin towns in southeastern England). The image was likely created by taking two separate exposures of the seated man, possibly Runicles himself, holding a plate. Taking the two negative images, one head was cut out and placed over the plate while the original head was painted over, then the altered negative was developed. Runicles likely created the image as a show of skill and advertisement for his studio. View on Ohio Memory.

Men standing in Zanesville floodwaters  Save
Description: Photograph showing twelve men standing in the floodwaters in Zanesville, Ohio, following the flood of 1913. They appear to be clearing furniture out of a flooded downtown building. In late March 1913, an unusually heavy rainstorm moved into Ohio. It rained steadily for five days and the water levels rose rapidly. By the third day of the downpour, levees were overtopped and many towns suffered disastrous flooding. When the flood waters receded, tons of mud and debris covered the streets, homes, businesses and factories of towns like Zanesville, where the Muskingum River had crested 27 feet above flood stage and water was 20 feet deep at several downtown intersections. The death toll for the disaster stood at 361, and property damages were well over $100,000,000 and 65,000 were forced to temporarily leave their homes. View on Ohio Memory.
