Description: Dated 1920, this photograph shows Warren G. Harding raising an American flag with two men outside his home in Marion, Ohio. This photograph is part of a photograph album in the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection (P146). Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States (1921-1923), was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College in Iberia, Ohio, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1900 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature. After serving two terms as an Ohio Senator, Harding served as Lieutenant Governor in 1904 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. Although he lost the 1910 gubernatorial race, Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty promoted Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His front porch campaign was centered on speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy” in this post World War I era. Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding unexpectedly died from a massive heart attack while touring the western United States, and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the route of the Ohio and Erie Canal in Pike County, Ohio, between stations 855 and 989. The Scioto Valley Railway, bridges, and other landmarks along the route are also noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). The Ohio and Erie Canal was constructed between 1825 and 1832, eventually connecting Cleveland and Lake Erie with Portsmouth and the Ohio River. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows the interior of the Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio Statehouse, during the mid-20th century. The Statehouse Complex includes the Statehouse, Senate Building, and the Capitol Atrium, which connects the two buildings. Construction began in 1839 to replace an earlier two-story brick structure after several complaints about the lack of space to accommodate the rapidly growing town and state. Initial plans estimated that construction of the structure would take two years and cost $200,000 proved to be wrong. The building was completed 22 years later (in 1861) at a price of $2.2 million. The Statehouse is a National Historic Landmark and is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Greek Revival Architecture in the United States. The Senate building was completed in 1901 and was built in the Neoclassical Revival style. Salmon P. Chase was the first governor to occupy the new Statehouse. View on Ohio Memory.
