Description: This color illustration is a full-length profile of a woman with light-brown hair opening a door into a room. She is wearing a white blouse, black scarf tied in a bow at the neck, and a floor-length brown skirt. The artist, Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952), was famous for his portraits of the so-called "Christy Girl," his romanticized vision of the modern young society woman. Born in Morgan County, Ohio, Christy spent his youth on his parents' farm near Duncan Falls. Christy’s mother encouraged his work as a painter and sketch artist. During the 1890s Christy moved to New York City and studied under William Merritt Chase, who encouraged his students to paint their subjects in a realistic manner. After achieving success as an illustrator, Christy open his own studio and began painting portraits and landscape scenes. Christy became a well-known artist because of his involvement in the Spanish-American War. During this conflict, he accompanied American soldiers into battle. He provided magazines, such as "Scribner's," "Harper's," "The Century", and "Leslie's Weekly," with drawings of the battlefields. After the war, Christy became famous for his artwork depicting the "Christy Girl," whose image he used in books, magazines, calendars, and even patriotic posters. Over the next decade, Christy emerged as one of America's most popular artists and illustrators. He returned to his childhood home in Ohio and opened his own studio. His fame continued to grow during the 1910s. He returned to New York and opened a studio in 1915. During World War I he drew posters encouraging his fellow Americans to support the war effort. Once again, the "Christy Girl" figured prominently in his artwork. Following the war, Christy slowly turned away from painting the "Christy Girl." During the 1920s the artist painted the portraits of a number of well-known Americans, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Eddie Rickenbacker. At the beginning of the Great Depression, Christy's popularity briefly declined, but the artist returned to painting women and landscape scenes. His celebrity status revived, he created commemorative paintings of historical events. His most famous painting from this era shows the signing of the United States Constitution. It hangs in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol Building. Two of Christy's works from this period also hang in the Ohio Statehouse. Christy died in 1952 in New York City. Christy died in New York on March 3, 1952 and was buried in the Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: U.S. Catholic Cardinal Francis Joseph Spellman, of New York, NY, visiting the troops at the First Marine Aircraft Wing Base (K-3) in Pohang Dong, Korea at Christmas of 1953. Cardinal Spellman visited Korea three Christmases in a row. This base was where PFC Michael John Petrucci was stationed from 1953-1954. Petrucci was born August 9, 1930, in Youngstown, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. Petrucci enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 1952, and began basic training at Cherry Point Marine Base in North Carolina in August 1953. He received orders for overseas duty in May 1953, but when the United States and North Korea ended hostilities in July 1953, his transfer to Korea was halted. Petrucci was eventually sent to Korea in September 1953 and stationed at the First Marine Aircraft Wing base in the town of Pohang Dong, where he served until July 1954. By September 1954, Petrucci had returned to civilian life in Youngstown, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes visiting with constituents at Scio Pottery in Scio, Ohio, October 1976. Scio Pottery Co. was a pottery manufacturer started in 1933 by Lewis P. Reese. The company at one point employed around 1,300 people--double the population of the small village of Scio at that time. The pottery closed in 1985 due to foreign competition. Rhodes was born on September 13, 1909, in Coalton, Ohio. He began his political career by winning election to the school board of Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, then serving as Columbus city auditor. In 1943, he was elected mayor of Columbus, an office he held from 1944 until 1952. Rhodes served as Ohio Auditor from 1952 until 1962, when he won election to his first term as Ohio governor. During his four terms as governor (1962-1970 and 1974-1982), Rhodes oversaw the building of airports, state office buildings, prisons, community colleges, museums and other public structures. He is also notable as the governor who ordered Ohio National Guard troops to Kent State University during a series of student protests against the Vietnam War. On May 4, 1970, the guardsmen fired into a crowd of protestors, killing four and injuring nine. Rhodes retired from politics following an unsuccessful run for a fifth term in 1986, and died March 4, 2001. View on Ohio Memory.

This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. H. V. Cottrell, historian for the Clinton League (sometimes called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1938-1943. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1965, this photograph shows inmates at the Ohio Reformatory for Women working in the fields at the institution's farm. In 1911, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the establishment of a separate women’s penal institution. On September 1, 1916, the Ohio Reformatory for Women opened in Marysville, Ohio, with a population of 34 inmates. When Marguerite Reilley was appointed superintendent of the Reformatory in 1935, she found dirty and unkempt inmates with excessively restricted living habits. She instituted the “human being” program which provided recreation, entertainment, jobs, and vocational training for the inmates. State Archived Series 1679 AV consists of 234 photographs which illustrate daily life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women, as well as photographs of the buildings and grounds, superintendents Marguerite Reilley and Martha Wheeler, and notorious inmate Velma West. Description: Taken in 1971 by U.S. Army medic Charles Tweel, this photograph shows a village in Vietnam with thatched roof structures and a well. An ammunition container rests against a fenced-in area in the foreground. This photograph is part of the Charles Tweel Collection (AV 324) at the Ohio History Connection. Charles Tweel grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University. After graduation in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a non-combatant, first training as a medic at Fort Sam Huston, followed by nine months of additional training at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He finished his training as a Specialist 3 and 91C, MOS, and went on to serve in Bamberg, Germany, with combat engineers for one year. In January 1971, Tweel served in Vietnam with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion (Air Mobile), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, based out of Camp Evans near Phu Bai, north of Hue, until December of that year. Tweel spent most of his service on various firebases as the medic in charge, and occasionally shared firebases with South Vietnamese soldiers. He also visited MedCAP stations (Medical Civic Action Programs) where he treated civilians. Tweel received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement, and was promoted to Specialist 5 in 1971. After discharge from the Army, he went to medical school and was in private practice as a family practitioner from 1979-2016, and now works part-time in inner city medical clinics in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, South Carolina. Description: This image shows the Thomas Jefferson statue in front of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. It was completed in 1912 by architects Lehman and Schmidt with the distinction of being the second finished building in Cleveland's downtown group plan. The project was developed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham, which sought to create a downtown space that combined all of Cleveland's public buildings in a central mall. The other buildings included in the plan are the Federal Building, the Cleveland Public Library and the Board of Education building. Cuyahoga's Beaux-Arts courthouse is said to reflect Cleveland's "turn-of-the-century" prosperity and includes materials like Milford pink granite, marble and English oak. Decorative art is also a major component of this building, from its statues depicting the rules of English law to its dramatic murals and stained-glass window. View on Ohio Memory.
