F. & R. Lazarus Company first floor anniversary sale  Save
Description: Photograph taken during the first floor anniversary sale, The F. & R. Lazarus Company, 1920. Decorative banners are seen hung above the first floor counters and clothing tables. Between 1851 and 1965, the F & R Lazarus Company retail store dominated the trade and physical landscape of Columbus. The company rose from its early years as a men's clothier in a 20 x 40 foot room downtown, to its position by 1965 as a member of the largest department store chain, Federated Department Stores. Lazarus' growth reflects that of the capital city; from small beginnings through a "golden age" of downtown development, and eventually branching out into the surrounding countryside. In 2003, the Lazarus Company was incorporated with Macy's, a member of the Federated Department stores, and is no longer in existence. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of Mahlon Wisecup, age 49. His formal attire suggests that the photograph was taken during his trial or sentencing. Wisecup, convicted of murdering his stepfather, was the 275th individual to be executed via the electric chair in Ohio. The caption at the bottom reads: “No. 275 Mahlon Wisecup of Highland County, Legally Electrocuted July 25, 1949 for the Murder of Honey Grant Nichols.” In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row. A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963. View on Ohio Memory.
