Description: This print shows Civil War Major General George B. McClellan, ca. 1861-1865. McClellan was a prominent 19th century American military and political leader, born December 3, 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1842, McClellan received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1846, ranking second in his class. McClellan resigned his army commission in 1857 to become involved in the railroad industry, and using his training in engineering from West Point, he served as an engineer for the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad and the Illinois Central Railroad. During this time, he lived primarily in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the beginning of the American Civil War in April 1861, McClellan reenlisted in the United States Army and played an important role in Ohio's early defense. Early in the war, General McClellan enhanced his reputation as a skillful military leader and was appointed as commander of the Army of the Potomac by President Abraham Lincoln. But after his unsuccessful assault on Richmond, Virginia, and his failure to defeat General Lee’s forces in the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln removed McClellan from his command in November 1862. McClellan never received another military command and later became one of Lincoln’s chief critics. In 1864, the Democratic Party selected McClellan as its presidential candidate to oppose Lincoln’s reelection, but Lincoln won the election by an overwhelming margin. McClellan resigned his commission in the United States Army and later became the governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881. He died on October 29, 1885. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows an aerial view of residences in Xenia, Ohio, on April 4, 1974, the day after a tornado swept through the city. Visible are shattered houses, scattered debris, streets, and a few vehicles. The tornado "super-outbreak" of April 3-4, 1974, resulted in 148 tornadoes in 13 states. The Xenia tornado caused the most deaths of any tornado in the outbreak. It touched down at 4:30 p.m. nine miles southwest of Xenia and entered the city about ten minutes later. It continued northeastward on a path of 32 miles through Xenia and Wilberforce into Clark County. The tornado killed 32 people from Xenia to Wilberforce. About half of the buildings in the city of 27,000 were damaged, and 300 homes destroyed. Nine Xenia churches were destroyed, as were seven of the twelve schools in the city. Fortunately, the tornado occurred an hour after classes had been dismissed. The roof and windows were blown from the Greene County Courthouse. A train passing through Xenia was struck by the tornado and 7 of the 47 cars were blown over, resulting in the blockage of Main Street. More than 1,300 people were treated for injuries at Greene Memorial Hospital. Restaurants that were not destroyed handed out thousands of free meals to residents and rescue workers in Xenia. Convoys of generators, floodlights, bulldozers, and dump trucks arrived overnight from nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The tornado also struck Wilberforce University and Central State University, destroying many buildings and injuring several people on each campus. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color photograph shows a group of onlookers gathering to watch a vintage train belonging to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville, Ohio, 1976. The train travels from Nelsonville to Logan and back. Along the way passengers view the historic, scenic Hocking River Valley; an historic company town, Haydenville; the Hocking Canal; and brick kilns of Nelsonville Brick Company. The image was submitted in the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: U.S. Marine Corporal Petrucci on R&R in Tokyo, Japan, May 1954, standing in front of a shop where he hocked his wristwatch. Michael John Petrucci was born August 9, 1930, in Youngstown, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. Petrucci enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 1952, and began basic training at Cherry Point Marine Base in North Carolina in August 1953. He received orders for overseas duty in May 1953, but when the United States and North Korea ended hostilities in July 1953, his transfer to Korea was halted. Petrucci was eventually sent to Korea in September 1953 and stationed at the First Marine Aircraft Wing base in the town of Pohang Dong, where he served until July 1954. By September 1954, Petrucci had returned to civilian life in Youngstown, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1965, this photograph shows inmates singing in the choir at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. In 1911, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the establishment of a separate women’s penal institution. On September 1, 1916, the Ohio Reformatory for Women opened in Marysville, Ohio, with a population of 34 inmates. When Marguerite Reilley was appointed superintendent of the Reformatory in 1935, she found dirty and unkempt inmates with excessively restricted living habits. She instituted the “human being” program which provided recreation, entertainment, jobs, and vocational training for the inmates. State Archived Series 1679 AV consists of 234 photographs which illustrate daily life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women, as well as photographs of the buildings and grounds, superintendents Marguerite Reilley and Martha Wheeler, and notorious inmate Velma West. Description: Two photographs show golfer Jack Nicklaus signing autographs at the 1970 Columbus Pro-Am Golf Spectacular held at Brookside Country Club. The event benefitted Dispatch Charities and Children's Hospital. Participants included Jack Nicklaus, Doug Sanders and Bobby Cole. Nicklaus presented the L. Charles Nicklaus Memorial Trophy to amateurs Carl Mengali and Bob Hoag, who each scored two-under-par 70. The photographs measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). Jack William Nicklaus was born in Columbus, Ohio on January 21, 1940. Nicklaus amassed an amazing array of achievements in his career, among which are 20 major championship wins and 100 professional victories worldwide. Nicklaus holds the record for Masters wins (6), and shares the record for PGA championships (5) and U.S. Open titles (4). Nicknamed the "Golden Bear," Nicklaus was known on the course for his intense focus, powerful drives and uncommon sportsmanship. He also became a renowned golf course designer. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Established in 1890 by Dr. Samuel B. Hartman, the Hartman Farm used to be one of the largest farms in Central Ohio. Located about twenty miles south of Columbus off of U.S. Route 23, the farm specialized in dairy cows and fruit orchards. A flat-bed truck passes several of the large white barns that were used to house livestock in this 1973 photograph. The High Street Photograph Collection is comprised of over 400 photographs of High Street in Columbus, Ohio, taken in the early 1970s. These photographs were taken primarily at street level and document people and the built environment from the Pontifical College Josephinum on North High Street in Worthington through Clintonville, the University District and Short North, Downtown and South Columbus. The photographs were used in a television photo documentary that aired on WOSU called "High Street." Description: Taken in 1971 by U.S. Army medic Charles Tweel, this photograph shows a road through hills in the countryside, with trucks pulled off the road at various spots throughout. This photograph is part of the Charles Tweel Collection (AV 324) at the Ohio History Connection. Charles Tweel grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University. After graduation in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a non-combatant, first training as a medic at Fort Sam Huston, followed by nine months of additional training at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He finished his training as a Specialist 3 and 91C, MOS, and went on to serve in Bamberg, Germany, with combat engineers for one year. In January 1971, Tweel served in Vietnam with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion (Air Mobile), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, based out of Camp Evans near Phu Bai, north of Hue, until December of that year. Tweel spent most of his service on various firebases as the medic in charge, and occasionally shared firebases with South Vietnamese soldiers. He also visited MedCAP stations (Medical Civic Action Programs) where he treated civilians. Tweel received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement, and was promoted to Specialist 5 in 1971. After discharge from the Army, he went to medical school and was in private practice as a family practitioner from 1979-2016, and now works part-time in inner city medical clinics in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, South Carolina. Description: This is the front facade of the Coshocton County Courthouse. The structure was built between 1873 and 1875 by architects Carpenter and Williams, and it sits on a central four-acre square. S. Harold & Co. were the contractors. The Second Empire style building is unaltered in appearance since its completion. The characteristic mansard roof and clock tower are accented with curly pediments, and inside, open cast-iron stairways that incorporate wooden banisters create an intimate and inviting environment.
