Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through New Bremen in Auglaize County, between stations 6319 and 6394. Railroads, streets, properties, and other landmarks along the route are noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of Charles T. Isom standing with an unidentified man and woman. Isom (1880-1943) was a graduate of Denison University and Ohio University, and served as a chaplain in World War I. He was Executive Secretary of Ohio Baptist General Association for 24 years, and worked as editor of the Ohio Baptist News. In the 1930s, he moved to Dayton where he was Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church until his death in 1943. The Ohio Baptist General Association, an organization of African American Baptist churches with its headquarters in Columbus, was founded in 1895 as the Ohio Baptist State Convention and reorganized as the Ohio Baptist General Association in 1919. Baker Art Gallery was founded by Lorenzo Marvin Baker, who began working as a photographer in the early 1860s. By 1886 he had established his business as Baker Art Gallery. Four generations of the Baker family ran the studio until 1955. After the studio closed, the Baker family gave photographs, glass and film negatives to the Ohio Historical Society. Description: This engraved portrait shows teacher, attorney, military leader and noted astronomer Ormsby Mitchel in formal attire. Mitchel was born on August 28, 1809 or 1810, in Union County, Kentucky, and grew up in Lebanon, Ohio. He was influential in establishing an observatory for Cincinnati College in the 1850s. During the early part of the Civil War, he commanded the Department of the Ohio and rose to the rank of major general. On October 20, 1862, he died of yellow fever in South Carolina, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. This original image was used as an illustration in Henry Howe's "Historical Collections of Ohio," published in 1907. The image includes a signature near the lower right-hand corner which reads "Moss Eng. Co., NY." View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows the aftermath of the Moulton, Ohio, tornado of 1920. In this photograph, three unidentified people are standing in the middle of a dirt road. Visible behind them is a demolished building and skeletal trees stripped of branches. On March 28, 1920 (Palm Sunday), an outbreak of 30 tornadoes across eight states killed 153 persons, ranking it among the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history. Four killer tornadoes moved into western Ohio from Indiana and another moved across Wood and Ottawa Counties. There were 29 deaths from these tornadoes in Ohio. The community of Moulton, Ohio, west of Wapakoneta, was leveled and three people were killed. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The photograph shows the front exterior of the first courthouse in Hancock County. The two-story frame structure has 8/12 windows, five on the second floor and four on the first floor. Just to the right of the front door is an Ohio Historical Marker that reads: “First Courthouse of Hancock County. This ‘temporary courthouse’ was authorized by the county commissioners in 1831, completed in 1833 and in use until 1842. The building then served many functions such as a school, church, hotel, dentist office, store and residence. It has been moved twice, 1862 and 1913, from its original location on the southwest corner of South Main and West Crawford Streets. First County Court Session, March 14, 1828. First Court of Common Pleas, June, 1828. First Lawyer, Edson Goit, June, 1828. First Courthouse, 1833. Second Courthouse, 1842. Michael Petrucci returning home  Save
Description: U.S. Marine Corporal Michael Petrucci with an unidentified fellow Marine returning home after service in Korea, July 1954. Petrucci was born August 9, 1930, in Youngstown, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. Petrucci enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 1952, and began basic training at Cherry Point Marine Base in North Carolina in August 1953. He received orders for overseas duty in May 1953, but when the United States and North Korea ended hostilities in July 1953, his transfer to Korea was halted. Petrucci was eventually sent to Korea in September 1953 and stationed at the First Marine Aircraft Wing base in the town of Pohang Dong, where he served until July 1954. By September 1954, Petrucci had returned to civilian life in Youngstown, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing Major General Robert Beightler, Commanding General, 37th Infantry Division, presenting a medal to an unidentified soldier. The 37th Infantry was nicknamed the Buckeye Division because it was originally comprised of Ohio National Guard units. The division went into combat in April 1943 on Guadacanal, Solomon Islands and spent over 600 days in action before the end of the war, more combat time than any other division. The 37th Infantry played a significant role in the invasion of the Phillippines. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing a printing press and high wheel bicycle from the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society on display at Page Hall, 1908. Formed in 1885 as the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, the organization eventually became known as the Ohio Historical Society and is now called the Ohio History Connection. Originally the society’s collections were held at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus, but in 1894, they were moved to Orton Hall on the Ohio State campus. The organization and its museum remained on campus, housed first in Page Hall and then in Sullivant Hall, until 1970, when they moved to their present location adjacent to the Ohio State Fairgrounds. As of 2014, Page Hall is home to the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. View on Ohio Memory.

2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
  7. Photographs of Objects. The Ohio History Connection retains rights to photographs taken of artifacts owned by the Ohio History Connection.
