Blast furnace checkered brickwork lining  Save
Description: This photograph depicts the interior brickwork and structural pieces of a blast furnace. The brick lining is refractory, meaning it can withstand incredibly high temperatures. Blast furnaces are used to smelt iron ore with coke to produce pig iron. This is the first step of steel production that occurs at mills. Air is forced into the bottom of the furnace, supporting the combustion, and giving the furnace its "blast" name. This photograph belongs to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Audiovisual Archives, so its subject is likely located at a Youngstown company plant. View on Ohio Memory.

'A Bivouac Fire on the Potomac' illustration  Save
Description: This is an illustration from Harper's Weekly of two African Americans entertaining troops by dancing near a campfire during the Civil War. ALTERNATE TEXT: A group of men, about 33 individuals, sit around a campfire at night near a military camp. There are a few men in the four tents, but they are not in focus. Two African American entertainers are near the middle of the make-shift circle. One African American is mid-jump with his arms on his hips. The fiddler, whos face is a stereotypical caricature with missing teeth, sits at the inner edge of the circle to the right side. A drum lays unused near the fiddler. Two men to the bottom right of the circle are playing cards with a piece of paper in between them that read "IOU". There are what look to be marbles around the "IOU" paper. A few of the soldiers are wearing different uniforms and hats, but are intermingled with the Union army troops. View on Ohio Memory.

Arthur St. Clair portrait  Save
Description: Photographic reproduction of a print depicting Arthur St. Clair (1736-1818), who served as the territorial governor of the Northwest Territory from 1788 to 1802. As Ohio moved towards statehood, St. Clair actively opposed Ohio's admittance to the United States. He hoped that what is now Ohio would not become a single state but rather two states. If this occurred, St. Clair believed that the Federalists would outnumber the Democratic-Republicans, which would allow the Federalists to continue to control the government of the new states. Because of this opposition, President Thomas Jefferson eventually removed St. Clair as governor prior to Ohio's admission to the Union in 1803. View on Ohio Memory.

Unionville Tavern photograph

Unionville Tavern photograph  Save
Description: Photograph of the Unionville Tavern, also known as the Old Tavern, in Unionville, Ohio. The oldest surviving tavern in Ohio, the Unionville Tavern began as a log cabin in 1798. Over the years, the tavern expanded, providing fine accommodations and food for travelers in northeastern Ohio. Among the tavern's more famous guests were Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. During the early 1800s, it served as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio. During the 1840s and 1850s, the tavern's owners also provided a safe haven for runaway slaves traveling along the Underground Railroad. An Ohio Historical Marker, erected at the tavern in 2001, reads "First known as the Webster House, later as the New England House, and more recently as the Old Tavern, this inn has served travelers on the old Cleveland-Buffalo Road (now State Route 84) since before Ohio became a state. As traffic on the old Indian trail increased and it became a post and stage road, the two original log cabins, built in 1798 and later, were converted to this two-and-a-half story inn between 1815 and 1820. While the tavern was the scene of Civil War-era parties and dances in the second-floor ballroom, local tradition suggests it offered much more clandestine hospitality to escaping slaves as a station on the Underground Railroad. The Unionville Tavern was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1973." View on Ohio Memory.
