Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. Description: This photograph shows a young woman in formal white dress, standing before a studio backdrop and holding what appears to be a diploma. It was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of Hallie Q. Brown at Homewood Cottage in Wilberforce, Ohio. The picture is signed to her niece, Lois A. Brown, on July 24, 1925. Brown was the daughter of freed slaves Thomas and Frances Jane who were actively involved with the Underground Railroad. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University and later became Dean of Women at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Brown helped found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), was elected Secretary of Education of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900 and served as the 7th National President of the NACW. The dimensions of the flag are 140 by 130 cm. Thailand's current flag design has been in use since World War I (1917). The 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was formed in Camp Delaware, Ohio and later renamed the 5th Regiment United States Colored Troops. Description: Photograph of South Chillicothe Street in Portsmouth under water. Caption reads: "Main street of town under water." The photo is from the "Portsmouth, Ohio, flood of 1937", SC 381. This collection contains 37 photographic black and white prints, 21 x 26cm or smaller; and 4 postcards in black in white, 9 x 14 cm. Photographs document the flood damage in Portsmouth, including sandbagging, floodwall construction, and Works Progress Administration (WPA) rescue efforts. In 1937, southern Ohio faced one of the worst floods in its history, known today as the "Great Flood of 1937." The Ohio River flood of 1937 took place in late January and February. In Cincinnati, the flood was particularly difficult for the city, where flood levels reached its crest of 79.99 feet on Tuesday, January 26, 1937. Communities along the Ohio River in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois also faced serious problems. Many people lost their homes as a result of the flood. The Ohio River Flood of 1937 caused more than twenty million dollars in damages. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Maria Black pieced this quilt of log cabin courthouse step blocks in rows of 7 x 9. The blocks are made of strips of lightweight wool, cotton, and silk fabric laid on a foundation. The fabrics are solids, plaids and prints in reds, greens, browns, blacks, pinks, and purples. The light strips are at the top and bottom of each block with the darks on both sides. Most of the blocks' centers are solid pieces of fabric in different colors but a few are made with quarter-square triangle blocks. Little red wool felt four-petal flowers are tacked with pink wool at the blocks' intersections. The back is pieced with various brown calicos. The applied binding is gold plaid cotton. The quilt has cotton batting. The quilt is constructed in the quilt-as-you-go method. It is 209cm x 211cm (82 x 83 inches). View on Ohio Memory.
