Description: Photographic reproduction of a print depicting Arthur St. Clair (1736-1818), who served as the territorial governor of the Northwest Territory from 1788 to 1802. As Ohio moved towards statehood, St. Clair actively opposed Ohio's admittance to the United States. He hoped that what is now Ohio would not become a single state but rather two states. If this occurred, St. Clair believed that the Federalists would outnumber the Democratic-Republicans, which would allow the Federalists to continue to control the government of the new states. Because of this opposition, President Thomas Jefferson eventually removed St. Clair as governor prior to Ohio's admission to the Union in 1803. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Bicentennial barn-painting program was an inexpensive, grassroots marketing campaign that painted the official logo of the Ohio Bicentennial on a highly visible historic barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Over 2,000 farmers and landowners submitted their barn descriptions to the committee for consideration. Beginning in 1998, artist Scott Hagan spent five years painting the logos, tailored to every barn's unique character. Typically, the barn owners hosted a celebration at the completion of their barn painting. This photograph is an exterior view of Barn #27, the 27th barn that Hagan painted, located on State Route 58 south of Route 113 in Lorain County. The logo has since been painted over. Description: In this photograph taken by Sarah Cloud for the Columbus Free Press, attendees gather at the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Civil Rights, April 25, 1993. Protestors hold a large banner reading, "No Reliance on Clinton, the Cops, or the Courts to Defend Lesbians/Gays in Society or the Military. Open the Borders! Let the Haitians In! End Racist and Anti-Gay Immigration [Illegible]." The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: These postcards show a recreation of the pioneer landing that originally took place at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers on April 7, 1788, in present-day Marietta. The 1938 celebrations included the re-enactment as well as a parade, all celebrating the 150-year anniversary of the arrival of 48 settlers by way of flatboat from New England. Under the Ordinance of 1787 and led by General Rufus Putnam, the Ohio Company of Associates settlers established Marietta as the first organized American community in the Northwest Territory. Many of the settlers were former officers of the Revolutionary War, who had been paid for their service with warrants for land by the fledgling United States government as a result of the scarcity of cash after the war. By the end of 1788, approximately 137 people inhabited the area, presided over by Governor Arthur St. Clair. The six postcards measure approximately 5.5 by 3.5 inches (13.97 by 8.89 cm). Located within the Marietta settlement, Campus Martius was a fort that served as a home for some of the pioneers and provided protection against attacks from Native Americans. It was named for the ancient Field of Mars, where the Roman military trained. The present-day Campus Martius Museum became a part of the Ohio Historical Society in 1918, focusing on the subject of migration in Ohio's history. The restored home of Rufus Putnam, which was a part of the original fort, was later enclosed within a wing of the museum. The Ohio Company's Land Office is located behind the museum.
