F. & R. Lazarus Company furniture department  Save
Description: Photograph of the furniture department at The F. & R. Lazarus Company, February 28, 1957. Between 1851 and 1965, the F & R Lazarus Company retail store dominated the trade and physical landscape of Columbus. The company rose from its early years as a men's clothier in a 20 x 40 foot room downtown, to its position by 1965 as a member of the largest department store chain, Federated Department Stores. Lazarus' growth reflects that of the capital city; from small beginnings through a "golden age" of downtown development, and eventually branching out into the surrounding countryside. In 2003, the Lazarus Company was incorporated with Macy's, a member of the Federated Department stores, and is no longer in existence. View on Ohio Memory.

Ohio Caverns  Save
Description: This image shows the insides of the Ohio Caverns near West Liberty. In 1897, a farm boy investigating the disappearance of water into a sinkhole in a nearby field discovered this system of subterranean passageways. Digging down a few feet, he found an opening to a cave that had begun forming perhaps several thousand years earlier during the Ice Age in soluble limestone bedrock that was approximately 400 million years old. Ground water dripping down from the cavern's ceiling continues to form stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral coatings on the cavern's walls, floor, and ceiling. A portion of Ohio Caverns near the discovery site was opened to the public in 1897, but that section closed in 1925 when a more extensive and geologically interesting part of the cave was discovered. Ohio Caverns is the largest known cave system in the state and is widely considered to be the most beautiful of all Ohio caves. View on Ohio Memory.

Imperial Chinese flag 1890-1910  Save
Description: This Imperial Chinese flag dates from 1890 to 1911. The wool flag depicts a blue five-toed dragon reaching for a red sun on a yellow rectangular field. The halyard edge is pink. An attached tag has been torn in half; the remaining portion reads "Lt. Gen CH / China / Re / 19." If complete, the tag would likely read "Lieutenant General Chaffee / China / Relief / 1900." Lieutenant General Adna Romanza Chaffee (1842-1914) acquired this flag during his service in the Boxer Rebellion. Alcott Farrar Elwell of East Hebron, New Hampshire, donated this flag to the Ohio Historical Society in 1962. From 1899-1901, the Chinese Society of Right and Harmonious Fists launched an uprising against foreign influences in China. Westerners referred to members of the society as "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts and calisthenics. Targets of the Boxers' violence were foreign builders, diplomats and Christians, both foreign and Chinese. The United States and other countries with interests in China sent troops to rescue their citizens who were under siege in the legation compound of Beijing (then Peking). This international force, known in the United States as the China Relief Expedition, suppressed the rebellion and imposed reparations on China. View on Ohio Memory.
