Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through Paulding County between stations 3862 and 4033. Properties, bridges, roads, stations, locks, and other landmarks along the route are also noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Charles Goodyear portrait from "Trials of an Inventor, Life and Discoveries of Charles Goodyear," by Rev. Bradford K. Peirce, 1866. Charles Goodyear (1800-1860) was an inventor who patented a process to vulcanize rubber in 1839. Although not directly involved with the company, he was the namesake of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, founded in 1898 by Frank and C. W. Seiberling. The firm quickly emerged as a leader in the production of rubber items, including bicycle tires, pneumatic carriage and automobile tires, horseshoes, and hoses. By 1926, Goodyear was the largest rubber company in the world, and it is still one of the major players in the industry today. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color photograph is a close-up of the cornerstone of the historic First Presbyterian Church in West Union, Ohio, ca. 1965-1970. The text reads: “First Presbyterian Church / organized 1800 / erected 1810.” Possibly made of granite, the cornerstone contrasts sharply with the warm-toned stone wall that encases it. The congregation was organized circa 1800 on Thomas Kirker's land on Eagle Creek, about three miles from West Union. Kirker, Ohio's second governor, was influential in organizing the congregation and raising funds for the building’s construction. Stonemason Thomas Metcalfe, Kentucky governor from 1828-1832, was awarded the contract to build the walls for $250; total construction cost was $500. Before the American Civil War, the First Presbyterian Church's ministers and congregation played an active role in the abolitionist movement, including assisting fugitive slaves. During the Civil War, the church also briefly served as a barracks for the Seventieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment of recruits from Adams County and eastern Brown County. Description: Photograph showing Sgt. Daniel Kozinski (left) of New Jersey, Cpl. Robert Frencel (center) of Cleveland, and Cpl. Michael John Petrucci (right), in early 1954. The photograph was taken in the G-1 Personnel Office of the U.S. First Marine Aircraft Wing Base K-3 in Pohang Dong, Korea. Petrucci was born August 9, 1930, in Youngstown, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. Petrucci enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 1952, and began basic training at Cherry Point Marine Base in North Carolina in August 1953. He received orders for overseas duty in May 1953, but when the United States and North Korea ended hostilities in July 1953, his transfer to Korea was halted. Petrucci was eventually sent to Korea in September 1953 and stationed at the First Marine Aircraft Wing base in the town of Pohang Dong, where he served until July 1954. By September 1954, Petrucci had returned to civilian life in Youngstown, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing Governor James A. Rhodes with three unidentified attendees at an "Early Bird" dinner at the Governor's Mansion, June 10, 1978. Located on Parkview Avenue in Bexley, Ohio, the 25-room Tudor-Norman mansion was a gift to the state of Ohio in 1955, and has been the residence of Ohio's governors since 1957. Rhodes was born on September 13, 1909, in Coalton, Ohio. He began his political career by winning election to the school board of Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, then serving as Columbus city auditor. In 1943, he was elected mayor of Columbus, an office he held from 1944 until 1952. Rhodes served as Ohio Auditor from 1952 until 1962, when he won election to his first term as Ohio governor. During his four terms as governor (1962-1970 and 1974-1982), Rhodes oversaw the building of airports, state office buildings, prisons, community colleges, museums and other public structures. He is also notable as the governor who ordered Ohio National Guard troops to Kent State Univer View on Ohio Memory.

This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. H. V. Cottrell, historian for the Clinton League (sometimes called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1938-1943. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Description: Dated ca. 1950-1959, this photograph captures the moment when an inmate is permitted to select a print dress to replace her blue prison uniform. In 1911, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the establishment of a separate women’s penal institution. On September 1, 1916, the Ohio Reformatory for Women opened in Marysville, Ohio, with a population of 34 inmates. When Marguerite Reilley was appointed superintendent of the Reformatory in 1935, she found dirty and unkempt inmates with excessively restricted living habits. She instituted the “human being” program which provided recreation, entertainment, jobs, and vocational training for the inmates. State Archived Series 1679 AV consists of 234 photographs which illustrate daily life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women, as well as photographs of the buildings and grounds, superintendents Marguerite Reilley and Martha Wheeler, and notorious inmate Velma West. The High Street Photograph Collection is comprised of over 400 photographs of High Street in Columbus, Ohio, taken in the early 1970s. These photographs were taken primarily at street level and document people and the built environment from the Pontifical College Josephinum on North High Street in Worthington through Clintonville, the University District and Short North, Downtown and South Columbus. The photographs were used in a television photo documentary that aired on WOSU called "High Street."
