Portsmouth from the Kentucky Shore illustration  Save
Description: Engraved print showing the city of Portsmouth from the Kentucky shore, from "Historical Collections of Ohio" by Henry Howe, 1847. Along the river are two steamboats called the Scioto and the Ashland, and the U.S. Hotel can be seen on the Portsmouth shore. Portsmouth is the county seat of Scioto County, and was formally laid out by Henry Massie in 1803. Located at the intersection of the Ohio River and the Scioto River, Portsmouth grew quickly due to the traffic on the rivers. The town continued to prosper with the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal during the 1820s and the 1830s. View on Ohio Memory.

Ohio State Office Building Hearing Room Two photograph  Save
Description: This photograph shows Hearing Room 2 in the State Office Building, Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1935. A raised judicial bench with five chairs is situated against a patterned drapery curtain. A row of wall murals illustrate historic events and individuals. Rows of chairs face the judicial bench. Construction of the building began in 1930 and was completed in 1933. The 14-story, white marble structure was designed by Cincinnati architect Harry Hake and serves as a classic example of the Art Moderne style. The interior of the building includes public spaces decorated with murals, mosaics and bas-reliefs that tell the history of Ohio and its industries. The building was later known as the Ohio Judicial Center until 2011, when the state Supreme Court named the center in honor of the late Chief Justice Thomas Moyer, who was the second-longest-serving chief justice in state history at the time of his death in April 2010.
